The Lindenwood women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against the Penn State Nittay Lions on Saturday afternoon from Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa. The game was the final matchup of a two-game CHA series between the two teams. Penn State took game one of the series by a score of 3-2 on Friday afternoon.
Lindenwood dominated the action in the first period, outshooting Penn State 13-4 over the opening 20 minutes of play. Despite an elevated shot total, the Lady Lions were unable to find the back of the net, as the period ended even at zero.
As the second period began, Lindenwood's
Carrie Atkinson was whistled off the ice for a hooking minor, sending Penn State to the power play. While on the penalty-kill,
Britannia Gillanders scooped up a loose puck in the Penn State zone and with a nifty backhand maneuver beat the Nittany Lion goaltender. Gillanders' unassisted shorthanded score gave the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead. For Gillanders the goal was her second score in as many games, and the first shorthanded score of her career.
Penn State would answer back nearly eight minutes later, evening the game at 1-1. Katie McMillan was credited with the Nittany Lion power play goal. The teams remained tied heading into the third period.
The teams would skate even during the final period, as the score remained tied after 60 minutes of regulation play.
The game headed for a five-minute sudden-death overtime period. Penn State outshot Lindenwood 4-2 in the overtime period, but each team's goalie stood tall, and the contest ended in a 1-1 tie.
Jolene deBruyn made her seventh start in net for the Lady Lions, turning in 28 saves. After making just four saves in the first period, deBruyn recorded 11 saves in the second period, and 13 saves during the third period and overtime.
Gillanders and
Sarah Bobrowski each tallied a team-leading four shots on goal. In all, 13 Lady Lions were credit with at least one shot on goal.
Kirsten Martin won a team-high seven faceoffs.
Penn State held the edge in shots 29-25. The Nittany Lions also had the advantage in the faceoff circle, winning 25 of the 44 draws.
On special teams, Lindenwood was scoreless on its lone power play chance, and two-for-three on the penalty kill.
Following the tie, Lindenwood moves to 0-9-1, and 0-3-1 in conference action. Penn State moves to 5-6-3, and 4-1-1 from within the CHA. The Lady Lions will return to action on Nov. 18-19 for a two-game home series with the RIT Tigers. Puck drop on Nov. 18 is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
