Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

RIT Hands Women's Hockey Home Loss

The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated by the RIT Tigers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.

The teams would skate even during the opening 20 minutes of play, as the first period ended with the score deadlocked at zero. Lindenwood and RIT would each send nine shots on goal in the first period. Taylor Girard led the Lady Lions with three first period shots. Each team would receive one power-play opportunity, but were unable to convert.

Shortly after the teams returned to the ice for the second period, RIT scored its first goal of the series and built a one-goal lead. Caitlin Wallace tallied the even strength goal for the Tigers at the 2:51 mark of the middle period.

Lindenwood responded 31 seconds later with a goal of its own, bringing the score even at 1-1. Courtney Ganske ripped a shot from the blueline into the right side of the net for her first collegiate goal. Assisting on Ganske's goal were Jordyn Pimm and Emma Hare. The assists by Pimm and Hare were their first-career points as Lady Lions.

With just 48 seconds remaining in the second period and the score even at one goal a side, RIT would regain its one-goal lead. Kathryn Kennedy would register the unassisted even-strength goal for the Tigers, who headed into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Despite outshooting RIT 11-5 in the final frame, Lindenwood was unable to tie the score at two, falling by the eventual final of 2-1.

Jolene deBruyn turned in 26 saves in goal for the Lady Lions. deBruyn shutout Penn State over the final 31:18 on Nov. 12, registered a shutout against RIT on Nov. 18, and blanked the Tigers for the opening 22:51 on Saturday, setting a Lindenwood NCAA record for most consecutive minutes without allowing a goal at 114:09.

Lindenwood outshot RIT 30-28 for the game. Britannia Gillanders led the team in shots on goal with five.

The Lady Lions won 32 of the 59 faceoffs, with Kirsten Martin winning a team-high nine draws.

On special teams, Lindenwood failed to convert on its three power-play chances. The Lady Lions penalty-kill unit was a perfect four-for-four.

Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 1-10-1 and 1-4-1 in conference action. With the victory, RIT improves to 2-14-0 and 1-5-0 from within the CHA. The Lady Lions will return to action on Nov. 25-26 for a two-game non-conference series at Minnesota-Mankato.
