Women’s Hockey Explodes for Five Goals in Victory at Minnesota State

The Lindenwood women's hockey team skated past the Minnesota State Mavericks by a score of 5-1 on Friday afternoon from the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato, Minn. The five goals scored by the Lady Lions was the highest single-game total for the team this season, and the most since scoring five goals against Penn State on October 30, 2015.

With the game scoreless at the 14:40 mark of the first period, Lindenwood went to the power play after Minnesota State was whistled off for a holding penalty. Fifty seconds into the power play Emma Hare scored the first goal of her collegiate career, sending the Lady Lions ahead by a score of 1-0. Britannia Gillanders and Cierra Paisley tallied the assists on the power-play score.

Ninety-four seconds after the Hare goal, Lillian Marchant netted her first goal in a Lindenwood uniform at even-strength, as the Lady Lions increased their lead to two goals. Carrie Atkinson and Kirsten Martin were credited with the assists on Marchant's goal. Lindenwood would head into the first intermission with a 2-0 advantage.

Lindenwood would score the first two goals of the second period, as the team extended its lead to a four-goal margin.

At the 4:50 mark of the middle frame Paisley would register the first goal of the period for Lindenwood, with Carla Goodwin securing the lone assist on the play.

Goodwin would score a goal of her own at the 13:42 mark of the period. Gillanders and Tirra Lemoine dished out the assists on the play.

Minnesota State would score once before the end of the second period while on the power play, bringing the score to 4-1 after 40 minutes of action.

With Lindenwood holding a 4-1 lead in the final period, Gillanders would pick up her third point of the afternoon, scoring her second goal of the season. Sarah Bobrowski had the assist on Gillanders' goal, as the Lady Lions built a 5-1 lead.

Lindenwood would maintain the four-goal lead for the remainder of the period, and won by the final score of 5-1.

Goaltender Jolene deBruyn earned her second victory of the season in net for the Lady Lions, turning in 26 saves in the process. deBruyn sparkled in the third period as she made 13 saves, blanking the Mavericks over the final frame.

Minnesota State held the edge in shots 27-18.

With the non-conference victory, Lindenwood improves to 2-10-1 on the season. Following the loss, Minnesota State moves to 3-11-1. The two teams will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2:07 p.m. to conclude the two game series.
