Field Hockey Wins the ECAC Tournament Behind 1-0 Shutout Over Limestone

The Lindenwood field hockey team captured its first ever ECAC Tournament title after shutting out Limestone 1-0 for the second time this season on Sunday.

Although this game featured the ECAC Co-Goalies of the Year in Skylar Starbeck and Limestone's Tabria Cochran, both teams' defenders kept each other in check as the Lady Lions recorded the only shot in the first half. Lindenwood's one shot was the lowest total in any half all season while the Saints failed to launch a shot for the third time this season.

However, scoring opportunities appeared on numerous occasions thanks to corner attempts for both teams. The Saints held the edge with six corners to the Lady Lions' four. However, the Lady Lions were able to convert a corner attempt into a shot-on-goal from Tara Robben that was batted away by Cochran at the 25:36 mark. The Lady Lions headed into halftime with a scoreless game for the third time this season.

As the second half went underway, the Lady Lions dominated ball control as Noor Fons and Caro Theunisz each recorded a shot that traveled wide each within the first four minutes of play. Limestone persistently tried to steal the ball, but the referees called multiple fouls on the Saints to prevent them to have any chance.

The Lady Lions applied pressure on the Saints defense when they got a corner opportunity at the 41:24 mark in which Greta Banholzer shot right at Cochran. Cochran was able to deflect the shot to keep the game scoreless. Two minutes later, the Lady Lions continued to strike as Karlie Quinn registered a shot saved by Cochran at the 44:43 mark.

After Lindenwood was penalized with a green card at the 46:09 mark, the Saints generated some momentum behind two corner attempts and one shot. Starbeck exhibited her Goalie-of-the-Year talent by halting Kate Remley's pressuring shot to keep the Lady Lions from digging a hole. The Lady Lions went back to work on offense, posting three more corners and a shot from Graycen Dave during the next seven minutes of play.

Then the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year did what she does best. Robben received a pass from Shelby Easley off a corner and slapped a shot from 10 yards out to score her 21st goal of the season at the 54:42 mark. It was also her third goal of the tournament.

The Saints retaliated with two shots within a minute span, but the Lady Lions blocked both of them to maintain their lead. Easley initiated another corner that nearly transitioned into a goal from Bridget Hoogendijk, but Cochran continued her impressive performance by batting it away at the 60:22 mark.

Limestone started to play aggressive and pressed hard on the Lady Lion defense for the rest of the game. The Saints earned four corners in which they got off a shot each time including a sequence of two shots in three seconds. Every shot was blocked by a Lady Lion defender, sealing the game.

As a result from the stout defensive performance by the Lady Lions, they won their 10th shutout of the season including their fourth in a row. Although both teams shot an equal amount of eight times, the Lady Lions held the edge in the on-goal category by a 6-1 margin.
