Two Wrestlers Place in the Midwest Classic

The Lindenwood wrestling team concluded its 2016 season when it competed in the 38th annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis this weekend. Hunter Haralson and Batchka Zulkhuu highlighted the Lions' performance at 133 and 174 pounds respectively as each placed.

Haralson, entering the tournament holding an overall record of 5-4, beefed up his win column over the weekend. In the main draw, Haralson collected two victories including a major decision and a tiebreaking decision to advance him to the quarterfinals. He nearly moved on to the semifinals, but was edged in a 3-2 decision to put him in the consolation. There he would win out to take third place behind two more major decisions and two decisions. His performance improved his record to 11-5.

Zulkhuu began the tournament already in a challenging fashion as he needed a sudden victory to win his first round. He fell by decision in the second round, but Zulkhuu would then garner a hot streak of wins in the back-draw. First, he pinned his opponent just 1:10 into the match then followed that up with an 8-1 decision. He pulled off two more decisions to reach the semifinals of the consolation where he would fall by pin. However, Zulkhuu got the chance to take fifth place and took full advantage. The match reached the third round, but Zulkhuu found a way to pin his opponent to earn his sixth win of the event and eighth of the season.

Kyle Jolas, competing at 165 pounds, made his mark on the tournament when he rolled to the quarterfinals after winning an 8-0 major decision and a 6-2 decision. Dylan Archer lost his first round, but reeled off a 12-10 decision and two pins in the consolation weighing in at 197 pounds. Jake Borgmeyer performed at a high level in the 285-pound flight as he won his first round by a tiebreaker. He then collected two more wins in the back-draw including a pin. Greg Jacquez also won a round in the main draw then won two matches in the consolation in the 141-pound bracket.

The Lions will have a lengthy break before hitting the road for a matchup with Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark. on January 7. The dual will begin at noon.
