The Lindenwood women's basketball team dropped its second-straight game after an 85-51 loss to No. 5 Emporia State on Monday night in Emporia, Kan.
Â
The Lady Lions shot 25.4 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from three-point range while making 19-of-29 from the charity stripe. Lindenwood was outscored in the paint 40-24 and outrebounded 48-33.Â
Lindsay Medlen led the team with nine points and dished out six assists while
Kallie Bildner and
Gabby Walker each had eight points.Â
Â
Medlen opened the game with a quick layup, but Emporia State answered with a 9-0 run to take a 9-2 lead with 7:34 to go in the first quarter. Medlen traveled back down the court to draw a foul and knocked down both free-throws to cut the deficit to five points. The Lady Lions and Hornets traded baskets up and down the floor for a couple of trips and Emporia State held a 13-7 lead with 4:48 remaining in the opening frame. Lindenwood struggled to close the gap after shooting just 3-for-6 from the free-throw line and blanked from behind the arc. The Lindenwood defense played strong in the first quarter and held Emporia State scoreless for the remaining 3:49 to stay within striking distance and a 15-11 Hornet lead. Both teams played even in the opening frame even though the Hornets shooting percentage was much higher than the Lady Lions.
Â
Emporia State knocked down three free-throws and scored its first field goal since the 6:11 mark in the first quarter to take a nine-point lead less than two minutes into the second quarter. The Hornets extended their lead to 25-11 after a three-pointer, but
Megan Foster put a halt to the run with a three-pointer of her own. Emporia State maintained its double-digit lead, but a three-point play by
Sara Ross kept the Lady Lions on the brim of cracking down the lead. The Hornets put the pressure on the Lady Lions and took a 17-point lead with 2:25 remaining in the first half. Emporia State built on its lead into the break and held a 43-22 advantage at the half.
Â
Lindenwood moved the ball in the paint in the early part of the second half and found points and drew fouls for free-throw attempts. Bildner and Walker found success in the paint and
Charisse Williams took a three-point shot to cut the Emporia State lead down to 47-31 with 7:19 left in the third quarter. The Hornets continued to overmatch the Lady Lions and built a 60-37 lead with 2:32 to go in the third frame as Lindenwood turned the ball over 17 times at that point in the game. Emporia State cruised through the third quarter to take a 66-37 lead over the Lady Lions.
Â
Walker and Bildner continued to generate as much offense in the paint as they both scored their eighth point on back-to-back possessions to make it a 70-41 ballgame. Lindenwood could not stop the Hornet offense and Emporia State closed out the Monday night game with an 85-51 win.
Â
Lindenwood falls to 5-5 on the season and 1-3 in the MIAA while No. 5 Emporia State improves to 11-1 on the season with a 3-1 conference record. The Lady Lions will have a long break ahead and will not see the court until Dec. 31 when they host Missouri-St. Louis at 2 p.m. in Hyland Arena.
