Women’s Hockey Blanked by Penn State

The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated by Penn State on Friday evening from the Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa. by a final score of 3-0.
 
The Nittany Lions would breakthrough with the games' opening goal at the 7:20 mark of the first-period. Laura Bowman picked up the score, while Amy Petersen and Remi Martin tallied the helpers. Lindenwood was outshot for the period 11-9, and headed into the intermission down by a score of 1-0.
 
Penn State extended its lead to 2-0 midway through the second-period, on the strength of a Shannon Yoxheimer goal. The Lady Lions sent nine more shots towards the Penn State goal, but were unable to light the lamp. The Nittany Lions ended the period with a 2-0 advantage.
 
At the 1:02 mark of the third-period, Yoxheimer recorded her second goal of the game, bringing the score to its eventual final of 3-0 in favor of Penn State. The Lady Lions would only manage five shots during the final period. Between the pipes for the Nittany Lions, Celine Whitlinger made 23 saves en route to her third shutout of the season, In goal for Lindenwood, Nicole Hensley recorded 21 saves.
 
For the game, Penn State outshot Lindenwood by a total of 24-23. Leading the way for the Lady Lions in the shot category was Shara Jasper with six. Corbin Welsh won a team-leading 10 faceoffs. The Lindenwood power-play unit finished the game 0-3, while the penalty-kill unit successfully managed to kill-off both of its two opportunities.
 
Following the loss, Lindenwood moves its season record to 7-20-4 and 4-9-4 in conference play. With the victory, Penn State improves its record to 10-16-5 and 6-6-5 from within the CHA. The two teams will return to the Pegula Ice Arena tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. EST to conclude their two-game series.
