Women’s Hockey Upended at Syracuse

The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the Syracuse Orange by a score of 6-1 on Friday afternoon from War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, N.Y.
 
Syracuse jumped out to the early 1-0 lead just four minutes into the opening period, as Stephanie Grossi found the back of the net. Midway through the first period, the Orange would extend its lead to 2-0 over the Lady Lions as Grossi tallied her second goal of the afternoon. Lindenwood would send nine shots on goal during the period, but headed into the intermission trailing 2-0.
 
The Orange would tack two more goals onto their lead during the middle period, as they controlled the majority play over that time. Nicole Ferrara would score at the 4:55 mark of the second period, while Grossi again lit the lamp for her third goal of the game. The Lady Lions were outshot 14-3 during the period, and 25-12 after two periods of play.
 
Lindenwood made a goaltending switch following the second period, as Jolene deBruyn relieved Nicole Hensley. Hensley turned in 21 saves during her two periods of play. The Orange would score twice in the opening 1:20 of the third period to extend their lead to 6-0. Melissa Piacentini and Alysha Burris were the goal scorers for Syracuse. The Lady Lions would get themselves on the board at the 16:10 mark of the third period as Shara Jasper notched her 20th goal of the season. Assisting on Jaspers goal were Britannia Gillanders and Carla Goodwin, their seventh and sixth assists on the season, respectively. The game would come to a close shortly after with the final score 6-1. deBruyn made 12 saves in her one period of action.
 
For the game the Orange outshot the Lady Lions by a total of 39-21. Jasper led the way for Lindenwood in the shot category with six, while Sarah Bobrowski followed with five of her own. Neither team had success on their power play, as Lindenwood ended the game 0-1, and Syracuse finished the afternoon 0-2.
 
Jasper's 20th goal set a new single-season program record for goals scored. The Aurora, Colo. native eclipsed the mark of 19 set by Alison Wickenheiser during the 2011-12 season.
 
Following the loss, Lindenwood moves its season record to 8-21-4 and 5-10-4 in conference action. Syracuse improves its record to 17-13-3 and 13-4-2 from within the CHA after the 6-1 victory. The two teams will return to the War Memorial Arena to each conclude the regular season portions of their schedules tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. EST.
