Lions Split Doubleheader on Saturday

The Lindenwood baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Augustana by winning game one 10-7, but fell 12-7 in game two at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

Austin Georgen started the game with a 1-2-3 inning after striking out two Viking batters.  In the bottom of the first, the Lions scored on a bases loaded walk by Mike Ehrhard to bring in Nathan Prindle.  Rayce Singbush hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Drew Quinones, and Ryan Sosnowski drove in Sam Baxter on a single to right field.  The Lions held a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but Augustana got one run back in the top of the second.

With a two-run lead, Prindle extended the score to 5-1 after a two-run blast to left field.  The Vikings again cut into the Lindenwood lead with a solo home run down the left field line to make it a 5-2 ball game.  Augustana continued to fight back and took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning.  After three scoreless innings, the Lions put together a solid bottom of the sixth inning.  Jackson Fuller scored from second base on a double by Prindle.  Degener scored on a groundout to the right side of the infield, and Prindle crossed the plate on a Baxter single to shallow right field to give Lindenwood an 8-6 lead.

The Lions had a rough top of the eighth inning, but only surrendered one run to make it a one-run game at 8-7.  Lindenwood tacked on two more insurance runs on a Mike Ehrhard double that drove in Baxter and Degener.  Devin Breihan had a shaky, but scoreless ninth inning to earn the save and end game one in a 10-7 Lindenwood win.

Game two did not begin the way the Lions hoped for, as the Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Lindenwood scored one run in the bottom of the third on a Degener groundout that scored Jackson Fuller.  Augustana put up two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend its lead, but the Lions were able to get one run back in the bottom of the inning when Singbush scored on a Sosnowski double.

The Vikings had a big five-run fifth inning to take a 10-2 lead.  The Lions were able to string together some runs with the first one coming off of a Quinones single that scored Zac Perkins.  Degener scored on a Singbush hit-by-pitch, and Quinones scored on a sacrifice fly by Sosnowski.  Lindenwood was down 10-5 after five innings of play.  The Vikings added two runs in the top of the seventh to put Lindenwood in a tight spot.  The Lions added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not make a comeback.  Lindenwood fell 12-7 in game two.

The split gives Lindenwood a 5-1 record overall.  The Lions will complete the three-game series against Augustana on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
