Lions Open Season With 19-7 Victory Over Shorter

The Lindenwood men's lacrosse team opened its season in Georgia with a victory over Shorter University by a final score of 19-7 on Saturday afternoon. The Lions entered the game ranked No. 9 by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).

In the first quarter, the Lions scored three goals off their first five shots taken. Connor Eskridge scored the first goal at the 11:38 mark followed by a goal from David Corazalla three minutes later. Tyler Eidel added to the lead before Shorter scored its first goal at the 5:21 mark. Both teams exchanged goals to make the score 4-2 led by the Lions. Josh Coons scored the Lions' goal on a man-up attempt.

Coons extended the Lions' lead by two to start off the second quarter. He scored off another man-up shot then found the net again at the 9:43 mark. After Shorter scored its third goal of the game, Coons scored his fourth goal to give the Lions a 7-3 lead halfway through the second quarter. Jon George tallied his first goal at the 5:13 mark. With time waning down, Kevin Eskridge, the Lions' leading scorer one season ago, took a pass from Coons and flung the ball into the net for a 9-4 lead heading into the locker rooms.

Shorter began the second half with a goal at the 13:16 mark, but the Lions began to streak. The Lions scored four goals in a row coming from the sticks of Sean Darroch, Henry Wurzer, and Sam Heaton twice. After Heaton's second goal at the 4:11 mark, Shorter managed to keep the Lions scoreless until 32 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Hawks scored a goal to cut the lead to 13-6, but the Lions found the net twice within the last 30 seconds as Darroch and K. Eskridge scored their second goals of the day.

Corazalla continued the Lions' dominance on offense with his second and third goals to start off the fourth quarter. The Hawks scored a minute later to make the score 17-7 as both teams did not score again until Max Troha scored at the 3:34 mark. Troy O'Donnell would score the last goal of the game to give the Lions the 19-7 victory.

The Lions were penalized seven times throughout the game while the referees whistled the Hawks 14 times. On the defensive side, the Lions caused eight of the Hawks' 20 turnovers and picked up 29 groundballs. Lindenwood also converted better than 50% of its shots taken as they took 37 total shots. Ben Besancenez saved 14 of the Hawks' 35 shots taken for the Lions.

The Lions will make its home debut on Thursday as they take on Colorado State University-Pueblo at Hunter Stadium. Game-time is scheduled at 4 p.m.
