Women’s Hockey Opens CHA First-Round Series with Victory at Robert Morris

The Lindenwood women's hockey team opened the first-round of the CHA tournament with a 4-3 victory over Robert Morris on Friday evening from the 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Lady Lions broke through with the first goal of the game at the 10:41 mark of the first period. Shannon Morris-Reade registered her eighth goal of the season, beating the Colonials goaltender, Jessica Dodds through her five-hole. Carrie Atkinson and Shara Jasper were credited with the assists on the Lindenwood goal, their fifth and 12th assists of the year, respectively. The Lady Lions would strike once more before the end of the period, this time receiving a goal from Jasper. Assisting on Jasper's conference-leading 21st goal of the season was Tae Otte, her ninth helper of the season. The period came to a close with Lindenwood holding a 2-0 lead, despite Robert Morris holding the advantage in shots 9-8.

The 2-0 Lady Lion lead would hold up for the first 10:31 of the second period, it was at that time while on the power-play, Ally Larson lit the lamp for the first-time in her career. Larson's goal extended the Lindenwood lead to 3-0. Holly Dietzler and Emily Gunderson tallied the assists on the Larson power-play goal. Lindenwood would grow its lead to 4-0 just 56 seconds later, again scoring while on the power play. Jasper and Morris-Reade helped setup their linemate, Sarah Bobrowski for her eighth goal of the season.  The Colonials would cut into the Lady Lion lead with 7:05 remaining in the middle period, as Amanda Pantaleo found the back of the net. Lindenwood would outshoot Robert Morris 13-6 during the second period, and the shots would favor the Lady Lions 21-15 after two periods of play.

Early on in the third period, the Colonials would trim the Lady Lion lead in half on the strength of a Maeve Garvey score. The two teams continued to exchange opportunities on both ends of the ice for the majority of the period, with neither team finding much success. With 2:08 remaining in regulation and Lindenwood leading 4-2, Robert Morris pulled their goalie in favor of the extra attacker. The move would payoff for the Colonials as Mackenzie Johnston scored, bringing the score to 4-3. The Lady Lions withstood the Robert Morris attack over the final 1:25 of play and prevailed by a final score of 4-3.

In goal for Lindenwood, Nicole Hensley made 26 saves en route to her eighth win of the season, and the first playoff win of her career. The Colonials would hold the narrow edge in shots during the game 29-28. Bobrowski led the way for the Lady Lions in the shot category, sending eight pucks on net. On special teams, the Lady Lion power play scored twice, ending the game 2-4. The penalty-kill unit successfully managed to kill off both of its chances, finishing the game two for two.
