Day 2After finishing second last year,
Terrel Wilbourn returned to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships to win the 157-pound weight class title. And he did so on Saturday night. The Francis Howell Central native also completed his undefeated season by registering a 25-0 record including four hard-fought wins in the national title. He was also honored as an All-American.
As the lone Lion left, Wilbourn took the big stage in Sioux Falls, S.D. as he faced Jordan Rinken of Upper Iowa in the semifinals. Prior to the match, Rinken held a record of 21-5 and, like Wilbourn, won his first two contests by close decisions including an upset over ranked No. 4 Jonatan Rivera of Notre Dame (Ohio) in the second round. But the upset win did not phase Wilbourn as he edged out Rinken by a 4-2 decision to guarantee a second-place finish.
Awaited Wilbourn in the finals was Brady Bersano of California Baptist. Bersano, who ranked No. 3, had cruised to the finals after posting three major decisions including a 10-1 win over No. 2 Matt Martoccio in the semifinals. After each were introduced to the center mat, both wrestlers tangled up for the majority of the first round as the score remained scoreless heading into the second round. Wilbourn deferred, so Bersano kneeled and escaped to earn one point. Wilbourn responded with a takedown which gave him two points and a 2-1 lead heading into the final round. Bersano managed to escape again which tied the score up. However Wilbourn came in clutch with four points on a near pin. Bersano lured in two more points, but Wilbourn sealed the deal with a 6-4 decision-victory to capture the title.
Wilbourn's perfect season included a title at the Maryville Kaufman-Brand Open in November, four major decisions, one technical fall, and five pins. He also compiled a team-leading 54 points earned and went 12-0 in dual play.
Day 1The NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. completed its first day as the semi-finals of each weight class has been set. Each weight-class bracket has 16 wrestlers competing, and Lindenwood had four participate.
Terrel Wilbourn is two wins away from being undefeated for the year in the 157-pound division.
Wilbourn, who ranks No. 1 in the D2Wrestle polls, battled in a nail-biter of a first round against DeAndre Johnson of Limestone as the match took him three overtimes to win by a final score of 9-7. He then had another close match against JaCobi Jones of Colorado State-Pueblo and came out on top by a 3-2 decision. He is set to face Jordan Rinken of Upper Iowa in the semifinals. Rinken holds a record of 22-5 on the year.
Daniel Swan drew the top seed first round in the 125-pound bracket, and fell by a 9-2 decision. He competed in his consolation match, but could not lure enough points as he lost 7-2.
Kyle Jolas nearly squeezed by his opponent in the 165-pound division, but lost by a 5-3 decision.
Dillon Archer had to face Nebraska-Kearney's Romero Cotton in the 197-pound draw who Archer has faced three times this year. Archer kept the match close for the first two rounds until Cotton compiled points from takedowns. Cotton won by a 19-4 technical fall late in the final round.
