The Lindenwood baseball team lost 14-13 in the 11th inning to Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday in Kearney, Neb.
Â
Nebraska-Kearney quickly took a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but the Lions did not waste any time responding.Â
Paul Sherwood got the ball rolling for the Lions in the second inning as he drove in
Mike Ehrhard on a single through the right side.Â
Zac Perkins tied the game with a single to center, allowing
Jackson Fuller and
Bobby Lang to cross the plate. Sherwood scored on a
Kyle Teter single, and Perkins came through to score on a
Drew Quinones single, giving the Lions a 5-3 lead.
Â
Lang put the Lions up by three runs after his two-out solo blast to left field in the top of the third.Â
Wes Degener scored in the top of the fourth after Quinones grounded out, as Lindenwood held a 7-3 lead. Degener doubled in the fifth inning to drive in Perkins and Fuller for a commanding 9-3 Lindenwood lead. The Lopers offense found a surge in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own, and the momentum was slowly moving in the direction of Nebraska-Kearney.
Â
Lindenwood added a run in the top of the second after Lang scored on a passed ball, but the Lopers continued to fight back. Nebraska-Kearney pulled within three, but an insurance home run by Quinones put the Lions back up 11-7. The Lopers had a key three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, and scored one run in the ninth to tie the game at 11-11 heading into extra innings.
Â
Neither team scored in the 10th inning, but Lindenwood seemed to have its first MIAA series victory with two runs in the top of the 11th inning.Â
Rayce Singbush and
Ryan Sosnowski scored in the inning to give Lindenwood the 13-11 lead, but like most of the game, the Lopers found life. Nebraska-Kearney scored three runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to win 14-13 on Sunday.
Â
The loss sets Lindenwood back to 9-8 on the season and 3-6 in the MIAA. The Lions will travel to Edmond, Okla. on Friday to take on Central Oklahoma in a three-game series starting at 3 p.m.
