The Lady Lions softball team hosted Rockhurst on Wednesday afternoon at Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. for a double-header. The teams split, with Lindenwood winning the first game to break its nine-game losing streak. In the second game, Rockhurst exploded for nine runs total in the middle innings to win 9-2.
Game OneAn infield single followed by a steal of second resulted in a first-inning run for visiting Rockhurst after Kelsey Tepen double off the base of the left field fence. Lady Lions' starter
Bethany Fountain retired the next three hitters to strand a runner on second. Lindenwood had a runner on third with one out after an
Alexis Theis triple down the right field line, but couldn't get her across the plate to end the inning.
The Hawks hit another double off the left field fence in the second, but a bunt attempt by Danielle Cross went right to the charging Theis from first base and she tossed it to Newcomb at the plate to get the Rockhurst runner attempting to score.
The Lady Lions got some offense going in the bottom of the sixth.
Madeline Bohr led off with a walk, but was caught stealing. Theis also walked, and moved to second on a grounder to second. Newcomb and
Caitlyn Touchette hit back to back doubles to put a two runs on the board and to give Lindenwood a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh.
Fountain would retire the last 11 Rockhurt batters to close out the win in the first game of the doubleheader. The righty finished the complete game with only five hits given up.
Game TwoThe Lady Lions looked to keep their momentum going after the game-one win. A couple hits in the bottom of the first
Adele Linderman and
Madison Huot were wasted as Lindenwood stranded the bases loaded.
In the third inning, however, the Lady Lions used a Huot triple and a couple misplays by the Hawks to score twice. Starter
Morgan Colvis was cruising until the fifth inning. Three hits and a pair of errors by
Taylor Scott at shortstop gave Rockhurst four runs. The Hawks added on two more in the sixth inning off relievers
Brooke Miller, and then a two-run blast in the top of the seventh off
Bethany Fountain gave the visitors a 9-2 lead.
Huot added another hit to her stat sheet, but that's all the Lady Lions could do to fall 9-2.
Huot and Touchette both had three-hit days, a season-high for both. With the win in the first game, Fountain earned her first win of the season. Four different players collected RBIs on the day: Huot, Touchette, Newcomb, and Theis.
With the split, Lindenwood moves to 3-13 on the season, while Rockhurst moves to 6-10. The Lady Lions get back to action Friday afternoon when Emporia State comes to town for the first MIAA contests of 2016.
