Baseball Runs Out of Gas in Extra Innings

The Lindenwood baseball team lost 4-3 in 11 innings to Central Missouri on Tuesday night at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

Wes Degener led off the bottom of the first inning with a bunt single, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout.  Mike Ehrhard drove in Degener on a single to right field to give Lindenwood a quick 1-0 lead.  Central Missouri scored a run in the top of the third, but a key throw by Degener from center ended the Mules inning as he registered the outfield assists.  The Lions regained the lead in the bottom of the inning after a sacrifice fly by Ehrhard brought in Nathan Prindle.

The Mules tied the game again in the top of the fifth, and then took a one run lead after scoring in the top of the sixth.  Ryan Sosnowski tied the game back up with a single to center that drove in Ehrhard from second to make it a 3-3 ballgame.  Lindenwood had a chance to strike again in the bottom of the seventh, but an inning-ending double play kept it a tie game, and the Lions continued to count on the strong pitching performance by Connor Law.

After walking the first batter, Law turned a big double play and forced a groundout two pitches later to keep the game tied at 3-3.  Lindenwood went scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, and Law got one out in the top of the ninth before his night ended.  Jevon Boyd came in to finish the top of the ninth, and gave Lindenwood a chance to win it in the bottom of the final inning.  Law closed his night out with 8.1 innings pitched, one earned run allowed on six hits, tallied two strikeouts, and tossed 100 pitches.

The Lions had opportunities in in ninth and tenth innings, but could not get a run across the plate.  Central Missouri scored in the top of the 11th to take a 4-3 lead, and forcing Lindenwood to its final three outs.  Lindenwood could not produce enough offense in the end of the game, and fell 4-3.

The loss sets Lindenwood back to 9-12 on the season and 3-10 in the MIAA.  The Lions will remain at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. for a three-game series against Southwest Baptist beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m.
