Aftet tying the game in the fifth in game one, the Lindenwood softball team surrendered a pair of runs to host Pittsburg State to lose 3-1. In game two, the MIAA-leading Gorillas won 11-1 over the Lady Lions to sweep the doubleheader in Pittsburg, Kan.
Game OneStarting pitcher
Morgan Colvis worked around a couple jams to keep the game scoreless through the first two innings, but Pittsburg State broke through in the third to take a 1-0 lead on back-to-back singles after an error by Colvis.
The Lady Lions tied the game in the fifth when
Alexandra Newcomb blasted a homer to left field. The Gorillas would get the run back, however, in their half of the fifth when a home run by Katy Remy gave the home team the lead. Pitt State added an insurance run in the sixth on a bases-loaded single before Colvis forced a groundout to end the inning.
Newcomb singled with one out in the seventh, but consecutive foul outs ended the game 3-1.
The loss dropped Colvis' record to 4-10 as both Newcomb and
Maria Tippit collected two hits.
Game TwoAfter the Gorillas scored two in the bottom of the first,
Alexis Theis doubled home
Madison Huot to cut the lead in half.
Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, that would be the only run they could muster in game two. Pitt State scored three more runs in the second off
Bethany Fountain, and four more in the third inning. After making the score 11-1 through four innings, Lindenwood threatened in the fifth.
Madeline Bohr singled to lead off the inning, and
Brooklyn Sisk reached on an error to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Consecutive fielder's choices and a strikeout quickly ended the threat, and Pitt State would win 11-1 in five innings.
Huot collected a pair of hits, while
Caitlyn Touchette and Theis both added a knock.
Having now lost seven in a row, Lindenwood falls to 8-30 on the season, and 5-13 within the MIAA. The Lady Lions will travel to Joplin, Mo. for a doubleheader against Missouri Southern tomorrow with first pitch at 1 p.m.
