After a rain-delayed start for the Lindenwood softball team Wednesday night, the Lady Lions used a four-run third inning to carry the momentum the rest of the game for a 6-2 win. McKendree put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the second and fourth innings of game two to end the twin bill with a split at Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
Game OneThe Bearcats scored first in the second inning after
Morgan Colvis retired the first two hitters. Sara Radae singled, which Tylin Stephens tripled to left to take the 1-0 lead. McKendree added on to its lead in the third when an error by shortstop
Taylor Scott scored Hannah Branch from second.
The Lady Lions got some momentum going in their half of the third inning. After
Taylor Scott walked to lead off the inning,
Maria Tippit and
Alexandra Newcomb singled to load the bases with only one out. On a 2-1 count,
Alexis Theis hit a long fly ball to left field that would clear the fence for a grand slam.
McKendree threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs, including a liner straight up the middle that hit off Colvis' leg. The righty would strand the runners after forcing a groundout to her the next batter. Lindenwood would also load the bases in the bottom of the inning on a
Caitlyn Touchette single and a pair of errors by the Bearcats, but pitcher Holly Magre induced a ground ball from Newcomb to end the threat.
Theis recorded her third hit of the day after leading off the fifth with a triple that hit half-way up the wall in left-center.
Madison Huot followed with a triple of her own to right-center field after working the count full, and increase her team-leading extra-base hit total to 17. After
Rebecca Stocker scored Huot on a squeeze-bunt play,
Faith Koffron ripped a single right back up the middle,
Adele Linderman lined a ball right to McKendree second baseman Radae to double up Koffron at first.
Colvis struck out Stephens to end the game to earn her sixth win of the season. The senior struck out six in the victory. Theis went three-for-three and fell a double short of the cycle. Touchette finished with a pair of hits, while Huot and Stocker each collected an RBI.
Game TwoMcKendree got on the board early in the second game of the twin bill after a pair of errors by the Lady Lions led to a run without starter
Bethany Fountain giving up a hit. After Fountain walked the lead-off hitter in the second, consecutive infield singles loaded the bases for McKendree with nobody out. The Bearcats added four runs, including a two-run double by Brooke Gajweski to chase Fountain from the game. After
Payton Wilson came in relief, the Bearcats added two more before
Brooklyn Sisk threw out Gajewski at the plate to end the top of the inning.
The Bearcats used eight hits and two walks to score eight more runs in the fourth, and
Kaitlyn VanHooser surrendered two more runs in the top of the fifth to increase the McKendree lead to 17-0, which would be the final.
Newcomb, Tippit, and Fountain each scattered a hit each throughout the game, but the Lady Lions couldn't muster anymore offense in the loss. Fountain fell to 5-13 on the season with the loss.
The doubleheader split brings the Lady Lions to 12-36 on the season. Lindenwood will get back to MIAA action Friday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader against Southwest Baptist from St. Charles, Mo.
