The Lindenwood softball team split a doubleheader with Southwest Baptist on Friday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo.
Game One
Morgan Colvis retired eight of the first 10 Southwest Baptist hitters, with only two walks allowed with three strikeouts.
The Lady Lions provided some run support early as hits by
Brooklyn Sisk and
Maria Tippit put runners on the corners with one out in the first. Tippit stole second, and a throwing error by the catcher allowed Sisk to score from third.
Taylor Scott drove in
Bethany Fountain in the second inning with two outs to give Lindenwood a 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats worked Colvis into a jam in the fourth. After committing an error, Colvis surrendered her first hit of the day with a single through the right side. Colvis forced an infield fly and a groundout to quickly get two outs. After getting up 0-2 the righty induced a grounder, but an error gave the Bearcats their first run of the game.
Sisk tripled with two outs in the fifth, but
Madeline Bohr was unable to bring her home after working an 11-pitch at-bat. Lindenwood threatened again in the sixth when
Alexandra Newcomb nearly hit one over the left-field fence, resulting in a double.
Madison Huot would be hit by a pitch with two strikes, but
Bethany Fountain hit a hard grounder right at the SBU third baseman.
After sending down eight of the last 10 hitters, Colvis put two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh. Another hit for the Bearcats had the tying run rounding third and heading toward the plate when Sisk threw a perfect ball to Newcomb behind the plate to tag her for the second out. Colvis struck out her seventh SBU hitter of the game to finish the contest with only allowing four hits and one unearned run.
The win improves Colvis to 7-13 and raises her strikeout total to 87 on the season in 125 innings.
Game Two
In the circle for game two, Fountain didn't allow the ball to leave the infield, but still surrendered three hits and one run while striking out two.
Lindenwood got that run back in its half of the second.
Alexis Theis singled to lead off the inning then proceeded to steal her third base of the season. After a pair of outs,
Caitlyn Touchette drilled a double to left-center field to even the score.
With two outs in the fifth, Dana Graves drilled a homer to left-center field to give SBU a 4-1 lead. After allowing a double immediately after, Fountain was relieved by
Payton Wilson in the circle. An error by Scott at shortstop plated another run for the Bearcats, but Wilson forced a ground ball for the third out of the inning.
Scott and Sisk led off the Lindenwood fifth with singles to cut into the deficit. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt,
Maria Tippit lined into a double play to end the threat.
Rebecca Stocker singled with two outs in the sixth to move Theis to third. Two pitches later, Touchette launched a three-run homer to left-center field to put the Lady Lions down two heading to the seventh.
After SBU added four insurance runs in the seventh, Lindenwood went down in order in its part of the inning to lose the game 10-4.
The loss drops Fountain to 5-13 on the season.
The split brings Lindenwood to 13-37 on the season and 7-17 within the MIAA. The Lady Lions will host Central Missouri tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. as the university will recognize its seniors.
