Colvis Throws Gem As Lady Lions Sweep Lincoln

The Lindenwood softball team traveled to Jefferson City, Mo. to take on Lincoln in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. After a game-one gem by Morgan Colvis to lead Lindenwood to a 4-0 victory, the Lady Lions held on in game two to win 6-5 when the tying run was thrown out at the plate.

Game One
Colvis threw a gem, completing the shutout on two hits and one walk. Seven hitters recorded a hit, as Taylor Scott and Alexis Theis both had two knocks. Four different players tallied an RBI, including Scott, Theis, Rebecca Stocker, and Faith Koffron.

Scott knocked in the first run of the game in the top of the second after Adele Linderman was hit by a pitch and stole second base. The Lady Lions added another run in the third when Tippit and Theis hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning, and then Stocker drove in Theis with two outs to bring the score to 3-0.

Colvis sent down the first eight Blue Tiger hitters before Kiley Kerr singled in the third inning. The righty worked around a two-out single and walk in the fourth before ending the Lincoln chance with a groundout.

With two outs in the fifth, Koffron drilled a homer dead center to increase the Lindenwood lead to 4-0. Colvis retired the final eight Lincoln hitters to give the Lady Lions the game on victory.

The win improves Colvis' record to 5-12 on the year, and was her first complete game shutout in 2016. Linderman's steal tied her for the team-lead with three with Brooklyn Sisk.

Game Two
Bethany Fountain went the distance, striking out three. Sisk, Koffron, and Mallory Eitel each collected a pair of hits in the 6-5 win. Lindenwood was up two in the bottom of the seventh when Sarah Westhoff drilled a double to score one run, but a relay throw to the plate to catch the tying run was in time to end the game 6-5 in a thrilling finish.

After starting pitcher Bethany Fountain worked around a second-inning jam, the Lindenwood offense put a run on the board for her in the top of the third. Scott singled and Sisk walked to lead off the inning, but Fountain grounded into a fielder's choice to force Scott out at third. Caitlyn Touchette hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Sisk, but Fountain was caught sleeping on the bases for the third out of the inning.

Lincoln got the run back in its half of the third when a two-out single by Lauren Stamp score Hope McLeod to even the score.

The Lady Lions' offense would ramp up in the fourth. After Alexandra Newcomb flew out, Koffron hit a ground-rule double. A Brooke Tiehes single put runners on the corners, and a double steal gave Lindenwood the lead back. Eitel drove in Tiehes on a triple down the right field line, and then came around to score on the second Lincoln error of the inning to lead 4-1.

Three straight singles by Sisk, Fountain, and Touchette loaded the bases with nobody out. Attempting to squeeze, Newcomb successfully got the bunt down and reached while the throw to the plate to get Sisk was late. Pitcher Madison Ragar got of the jam, however, on another groundout and back-to-back strikeouts.

A leadoff walk by Jessica Wolken in the bottom of the fifth, followed by a single by Stamp, came around to score after a throwing error moved them up a bag before a pair of ground balls forced them to cross the plate to cut the Lindenwood lead to 5-3.

The teams traded runs in the sixth. For the Lady Lions, Eitel singled and scored on a Sisk sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the inning, Westhoff singled and Kiley Kerr walked. Another Lindenwood error moved them into scoring position, but limited the damage only allowing Westhoff to cross the plate.

Singles by Newcomb and Koffron with one out gave Lindenwood a chance to add insurance runs, but Ragar forced consecutive outs to head into the bottom of the seventh down 6-4. Fountain quickly got the first outs, but a single and error by Scott at shortstop was followed by a double by Westhoff to score Avery Myers. Spencer Silva came around third base in attempt to tie the game, but a perfect relay by Sisk to Newcomb to Stocker caught her in time to seal the win and sweep the doubleheader.

Fountain improves to 5-11on the season as the Lindenwood softball team is now on a three-game winning streak.

With the sweep, Lindenwood improve to 11-33 on the season. Today's doubleheader is not counted in the MIAA standings, so the Lady Lions remain 6-16 within the conference. Lindenwood travels to Springfield, Ill. on Wednesday for a doubleheader against the University of Illinois at Springfield with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
