The Lindenwood women's lacrosse team defeated the Regis Rangers, 9-8 in the RMAC Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon. The game was played at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
Regis jumped out to a 1-0 lead, scoring 1:59 into the first half off of a Rachael Walker free-position shot. Three minutes and two seconds later, Lindenwood's
Allison Hurley fed
Amanda Schimpke, tying the game at 1-1. The Rangers would score three of the next four goals, growing their lead to 4-2.
Morgan Judd scored the lone Lady Lion goal during the Regis run.
Over the final 17:11 of the first half, Lindenwood outscored Regis 4-1, establishing a 6-5 lead as the teams headed into the halftime intermission. Hurley,
Sarah Cromer, Schimpke, and
Jordyn Constance tallied the Lindenwood goals to close out the opening half.
Cromer would record the first goal of the second half, finding the back of the cage with 23:58 remaining, pushing the Lady Lions ahead 7-5. Regis drew within one goal of Lindenwood at the 14:44 mark of the half, bringing the score to 7-6.
Rachel Benzing and Hurley added the next two goals for the Lady Lions, growing their lead to 9-6. The Rangers would score twice more over the final 3:47 of play, cutting the Lindenwood lead to 9-8. However the Lady Lions withstood the late Regis rally, winning the game by a final score of 9-8.
In goal for the Lady Lions,
Rachel Ortell turned in eight saves, including six during the second half, to earn her 10th victory of the season. Ortell recorded 22 saves during the RMAC tournament, and was selected as the MVP for her efforts.
Lindenwood was led defensively by
Savannah Phillips and
Erin Abbott, who helped hold Regis to single-digit scoring for just the second-time this season. Phillips scooped up a team-high five ground balls, while Abbott caused a game-high four turnovers.
For the game, Lindenwood held the edge in shots (21-20) and ground balls (22-20), while Regis had the advantage in draw controls (11-8). The Lady Lions were 18-19 on their clear attempts, and 0-2 on their free position attempts.
With the win, Lindenwood improves its season record to 16-2 and 8-0 from within the RMAC. Following the loss, Regis moves its season record to 15-3 and 7-2 in conference play. The Lady Lions will await the announcement the 2016 NCAA Tournament field tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. CT to determine their postseason fate.
