The Lindenwood field hockey team lost its first game of the season when Queens of Charlotte needed a 3-2 overtime victory to overcome the Lady Lions.
Â
In the first half, the Lady Lions struggled to get offensive opportunities as they shot just three times and had three penalty corner attempts without scoring a goal. The Royals scored the first goal of the game with 21:57 remaining off a rebounded blocked shot. They followed up with their second goal with 15:22 left to give the Royals a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Â
The Lady Lions would not back down. Just 5:07 into the second half,
Tara Robben registered her sixth goal of the season off a dish from
Virginie Leyssens to cut the lead down to one. The Lady Lions nearly tacked on another goal with 22:01 left when
Amelia Rodriguez found
Caro Theunisz off a corner attempt. Thuenisz slung a shot that would have tied the game, but the Royals' goalie barely saved it. However,
Greta Banholzer recorded her first goal of the season off Robben's first assist of the season to tie the game up with 16:06 left.
Â
Shots kept flying off the stick of Robben for the rest of the game as she had three of her four shots saved and the other blocked. The Lady Lions managed to steer the Royals away from the offensive side of the ball for the remaining of the half to send the game into overtime.
Â
Both teams played stout defense throughout overtime. The Lady Lions only shot once for the remainder of the game while the Royals scored the final goal off their lone shot of the period to seal the game.
Â
The Lady Lions will make their home debut on Saturday, September 24 to take on Newberry for an ECAC showdown at noon.
