The Lindenwood field hockey team shined in its first home game of the season when five different players scored in the 6-0 shutout over Newberry on Saturday. It was also the first ECAC game for the Lady Lions.
Â
Skylar Starbeck got the nod to be starting goalie for the Lady Lions in which she played 28:39. She saved two early shots in the first 10 minutes of the game to stop any momentum Newberry tried to start. Newberry committed a foul at the 10:59 that gave the Lady Lions a penalty shot opportunity.
Savannah Motley took the shot and scored her first goal of the year to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later at the 11:44 mark,
Tara Robben flourished again with her ECAC-leading seventh goal of the season after
Greta Banholzer dished a pass around Robben's defender.
Â
The Wolves had possession of the ball at the 16:30 mark before
Megan Pranger stole the ball which allowed the Lady Lions to sprint up the open field. Banholzer went coast-to-coast and scored her second goal of the season.
Â
Before the half ended, two freshmen wanted to make their mark on offense for the Lady Lions.
Jessie Londono received a pass from Motley and scored for the first time in her career on a wide open goal.
Bridget Hoogendijk followed up with her own goal with just 10 seconds remaining in the half to give the Lady Lions a 5-0 commanding lead.
Â
In the second half, both teams exchanged possessions numerous times until Robben set a career-high with eight goals in a season when she and Banholzer connected for the second score of the day. The Lady Lions subbed in multiple times throughout the half to give each player time to compete.
Mackenzie Litterst also receieved playing time in goalie in which she saved two shots on five shots faced.
Â
The Lady Lions held the edge with 12 corner-attempts to the Wolves' seven and shot 24 times with 16 on-goal to Newberry's 11 and seven on-goal.
Â
After improving their record to 4-1, the Lady Lions will hit the field again to host new-ECAC member Mercy College at 11:00 am on Sunday.
