Men's Soccer Blanks Southwest Baptist 5-0

The Lindenwood men's soccer team defeated the Southwest Baptist Bearcats by a final score of 5-0 on Sunday afternoon from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.

For the fourth consecutive game, Xhovani Dokaj provided Lindenwood with an early 1-0 advantage. While in a one-on-one situation with the Southwest Baptist keeper, Dokaj was hauled down inside the box by the keeper, and awarded a penalty shot. On the penalty shot, the first of the season for Lindenwood, Dokaj fired the ball into the upper right corner of the goal, his team-leading 10th score of the season.

Despite outshooting the Bearcats 9-1 for the half, and limiting Southwest Baptist to zero shots on goal, Lindenwood was unable to convert any of its other opportunities. The first half clock expired with the Lions in front by a score of 1-0.

Early on in the second half of play, Jose Sanchez received a header pass from teammate Kyle Weinrich and used his own head to redirect the ball into the right side of the goal, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. For Sanchez, the goal was his second of the season, while the assist was the third of the season for Weinrich. Adnan Mahmutovic was also credited with an assist on the play.

Just over two minutes later, in the game's 57th minute, Mahmutovic fired a free kick from 22 yards out into the vacant right side of the goal, as Lindenwood extended its lead to 3-0. For Mahmutovic the score was his first of the season.

The Lions lead grew to four goals following an own goal by the Bearcats in the 66th minute.

Mahmutovic lined up for a corner kick from the left side of the field in the 75th minute and placed the ball directly inside the box for teammate Johannes Brendle. Brendle received the pass cleanly and deposited the ball into the back of the net, as Lindenwood moved ahead by a score of 5-0.

Aleksa Nenadic and Tim Licht split time in goal for Lindenwood, each playing one half. Nenadic made the start, and was credited with his fifth win of the season.

In the end, Lindenwood held the edge in shots (17-1), shots on goal (8-0), and corner kicks (13-2). Southwest Baptist registered two saves, to Lindenwood's zero.

Following the win, Lindenwood improves its season record to 5-2-2 and 2-0-0 from within the MIAA. After the loss, Southwest Baptist moves its record to 0-9-1 and 0-2-0 in conference action. The Lions will travel to Rolla, Mo. for a non-conference battle with the Missouri S&T Miners. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
