Field Hockey Caps Off a 4-3 Comeback Win to Open Season

The Lindenwood field hockey squad got a quality victory over Mercyhurst for its first game of the season after coming back from a two-goal deficit on Saturday, from Louisville, Ky.

Skylar Starbeck was frequently active during the first half as she saved two shots in the first ten minutes of play. However, the Lady Lions surrendered a goal after the Lakers intercepted a pass and found an opening on the right side of the net to get on the scoreboard first. The Lakers followed up with another score off a rebounding missed shot for a second-opportunity score, giving them a 2-0 advantage at the 10:48 mark.

Offensively, the Lady Lions quietly recorded three shots and three penalty corner opportunities during the first 29 minutes until freshman Bridget Hoogendijk scored the Lady Lions' first goal off a penalty corner from Nicole Johnston. Neither team took another shot for the rest of the half as the Lakers headed to the locker rooms with a 2-1 lead.

The Lakers came right out of the gate shooting a shot on goal from Bryna Cook then she scored seven seconds later at the 37:47 mark. However, the Lady Lions had plenty left in store.

Tara Robben began her senior-year campaign with a goal off a pass from Greta Banholzer to give cut the Lakers' lead to 3-2. Both teams exchanged possessions for the next nine minutes until Hoogendijk struck again with her second goal of the game thanks to a dish from Graycen Dave.

As the momentum shifted, the Lady Lions took full advantage; particularly Robben. She gave her team the lead after Dave helped with her second assist in the span of three minutes.

With time waning, the Lakers tried to seize a scoring opportunity at the 64:25 mark, but Starbeck, the Lady Lions' new starting goalkeeper, denied the shot with her sixth save of the game. The Lady Lions would not allow another shot taken as they sealed their first win of the season.

The Lady Lions recorded 10 total shots in which five of them were on goal. Amelia Rodriguez was the third Lady Lion to shoot on goal along with Robben and Hoogendijk.

The Lady Lions continue their stay in Louisville, Ky. as they will face the Griffins of Seton Hill on Sunday, September 4 at 2 pm C.T.
