The Lindenwood men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie versus the Truman State Bulldogs on Sunday evening from Legends Stadium in Quincy, Ill. The match was the first contest of the 2016 Quincy Invitational.Â
After 10 minutes of scoreless play to open the match, the Lions and Bulldogs increased their pressure, resulting in two goals in a 33 second span.Â
With 10:01 of action gone by, Lindenwood found the back of the net first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead.
Thomas Hutcheson scooped up a Truman State turnover, and quickly sent a pass over to teammate
Xhovani Dokaj. Dokaj deposited the ball into the back of the net, for his first goal of the season.Â
The Bulldogs answered quickly, as Derek Murray received a cross pass from Nate Luebbert and headed it past Lindenwood goalkeeper,
Aleksa Nenadic for the tying score.
Lindenwood outshot Truman State 5-1 during the first-half, which ended with the score deadlocked at 1-1.
During the second-half, the Bulldogs applied significant pressure, outshooting the Lions 9-2. Nenadic stood tall in goal for Lindenwood, recording four saves. The second period came to a close with the two teams even at 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation play, and the match headed for overtime.
The overtime periods brought much of the same action as neither team was able to find the deciding goal, despite opportunities on each end. Truman State tallied seven shots in the two overtime periods, while Lindenwood had just two. When the second overtime ended, the score remained 1-1.
In the end, Truman State had the advantage in shots (17-9), shots on goal (8-3), and corner kicks (11-7). Lindenwood held the edge in saves (7-2).
Following the tie Lindenwood moves its record to 1-0-1 on the season, while Truman State moves to 0-0-1. The Lions will return to action tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. for a non-conference match with the Quincy Hawks.
