Houck Scores on Senior Day As Lions Blank Hornets

Lindenwood senior midfielder Alyssa Houck scored early in the second half to lead the Lions to a 1-0 victory over visiting Emporia State. The win moves Lindenwood to 5-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in MIAA contests.
The first half was back-and-forth with both teams firing nine shots. Lindenwood had two tough shots on goal in the 16th minute with Morgan Weller firing a shot to the Emporia State keeper. ESU made the save, but Becky Roberts collected the rebound, ripping another shot to the Hornet keeper, but was again denied. A late foul on Emporia State gave Lindenwood a great chance late as Samantha Linderer took a contested header that was pushed wide by the ESU keeper.
Lindenwood opened the second half with a flurry of activity. The Lions had four shots in the first five minutes of the second. Alyssa Houck tallied the first goal of the contest in the 52nd minute. Morgan Weller sent the ball 20 yards downfield to a streaking Houck. Houck was one-on-one with the ESU keeper, ripping a shot past the goalie for her fourth goal of the year.
The Lindenwood defense was strong in the second half, as ESU did not get a shot off until the 73rd minute. However, Mary McGilvray fended off a barrage of ESU shots late in the game to seal the 1-0 win for the Lions. It was her fourth shutout of the season.
Up next for the Lions is a road contest at Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo. on Oct. 20. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
