Women's rugby defeated Army 90-5 in the first of two matches on a weekend east coast trip Friday night at the Anderson Rugby Complex in West Point, New York.
In an unusual occurrence for the Lady Lions this season, the pitch was dry and the sky void of any rainfall, and they took advantage of it. It only took two minutes of game time for Lindenwood to score the first try due to some good pick-and-go work from the forwards. Game-day captain Teresa Bueso-Gomez scored in the ninth minute and the Lady Lions were off and running. A total of 14 different players dotted down in the match and McKenzie Hawkins was impressive in the kicking game with conversions from all over the pitch. All 23 suited players saw action and contributed to the final outcome.
Head Coach Billy Nicholas was very satisfied with how things went.
"Today was a great day, not just because of the win, but because we had the opportunity to play people at different positions and try our attacking and defensive structure that we've been tweaking in the off-season," he said. "We have 10 rookies out of 25 this weekend, which is a large number, but it provides a great experience and opportunity for them to grow."
Lindenwood improved to 2-0 in collegiate competition with the victory. The Lady Lions will conclude their trip Sunday afternoon when they face American International College at 3 p.m. in Springfield, Massachusetts.
