Lions Win Three at WCIHL Inter-Regional

The roller hockey team won all three games played at the Western Collegiate Inline Hockey League Inter-Regional November 11-12 at The Rinks in Huntington Beach, California.  The Lions stopped the University of California – Santa Barbara 10-1, and Arizona State 4-2 on Saturday, and then defeated Cal State – Fullerton 10-3 on Sunday.

In the opening game against the Gauchos, Lindenwood did not score the first goal of the game, but netted the next four to take a 4-1 lead after the first period.  Nick DellaMorte scored two of those goals while Daniel Rosse and Tim Brey accounted for the others.  Lindenwood dominated from that point, with five more in the second and a single tally in the third.

Overall, the Lions outshot UC – Santa Barbara 32-19 and David Farley stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced to earn the win in goal.  DellaMorte earned Star #1 honors with two goals and two assists, Adam Swims was Star #2 with a score and three assists, and Tyler Watson was named Star #3 with two goals and an assist.

The second game of the day was much closer with the outcome not decided until late in the final period.  Lindenwood was able to take a 1-0 lead late in the first on a power play goal from Jalen Krogman, assisted by DellaMorte.  Arizona State tied it early in the second, but the DellaMorte-Krogman pair connected again on another power play with just over a minute remaining in the period to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage.  Just 58 seconds into the final frame, DellaMorte and Krogman again teamed for a goal, this time with DellaMorte getting credit for the score while Krogman earned the assist.  That made it 3-1 before the Sun Devils pulled back within one on a power play at 5:20.  Lindenwood was able to get some insurance late when Rosse hit the back of the net on a play set up by Swims and Krogman with 2:02 left in regulation.

The Lions outshot Arizona State 28-15 and Lindenwood goaltender Paul Town stopped 13 of 15 shots to earn the win.  Krogman was the obvious choice for Star #1 with two goals and two assists, and a point on four Lions goals. DellaMorte earned Star #2 honors with a goal and two assists, and Rosse was named Star #3 with one goal.

The final game of the weekend for Lindenwood against Cal State – Fullerton proved to be a penalty filled battle and a close contest before the Lions were able to overwhelm the Titans and pull away in the third.  Austin Steger gave Lindenwood an early power play goal on a feed from DellaMorte at 8:06 in the first, but Fullerton tied it while also on the man-advantage and it was 1-1 after the first.  Things turned a bit messy in the second with 18 minutes of penalties.  Despite the number of calls, only two of the six combined goals in the period came on the power play.  When the dust settled, the Lions had scored four times and the Titans twice, giving Lindenwood a 5-3 lead.  It was all Lions in the final frame with five unanswered goals.

Cody Page earned Star #1 honors with three goals and a helper, DellaMorte was named Star #2 with two goals and two assists, and Austin Steger earned the hat trick and Star #3 honors for his efforts.  Lindenwood outshot Fullerton 40-17 and Town made 14 saves on those 17 shots to get the win in goal.

With the three victories, the Lions remained undefeated on the season at 10-0.  Lindenwood gets a two month break before returning to the rink for the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association Inter-Regional January 20-21 at the Hot Shots Sports Arena in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania.
