Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's Hockey Heads Into Break With A Victory

The Lindenwood women's hockey team survived an early onslaught of shots by Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn. The Lady Lions then took control of the second part of the game in a 4-1 non-conference victory over the Mavericks.

Minnesota State took 20 shots in the first 20 minutes, with eight of those shots going on goal. Jolene deBruyn turned away all eight shots, and Lindenwood's defense played a big role with eight blocks in the period.

After the scoreless first period, Minnesota State gained a five-on-three power play for 80 seconds early in the second period. The Mavericks attempted five shots in that span, but deBruyn made three saves and Ally Larson blocked two shots.

Even after the power play, Minnesota State continued to have a big edge in shots, but Lindenwood finally got momentum midway through the period with back-to-back goals in less than a minute. Sierra Burt scored first at the 12:26 mark, and Britannia Gillanders put the Lady Lions up by two at the 13:18 mark. The Mavericks finally got on the board with less than six minutes remaining in the period, but Lindenwood took a 2-1 lead into the final period.

In the third period, Lindenwood received two insurance goals from Kirsten Martin. The first one came at the 2:04 mark, and she scored again just over six minutes later. Minnesota State continued to take shots without success, including while pulling the goalie for over a minute while on the power play. After the Lady Lions killed that power play off, it skated the final two and a half minutes without any problems.

Minnesota State finished the game with 69 shots, including 36 on goal. deBruyn made 35 saves, and Lindenwood blocked 20 shots, including three each from Mariah Hinds, Larson, and Carla Goodwin. Minnesota State was 0-for-five on the power play. Lindenwood had 17 shots on goal in the game.

Martin finished the game with three points after also having one assist. Gillanders assisted on two goals to also finish with three points. Burt, Taylor Girard, Lillian Marchant, and Courtney Ganske all had one assist. Martin, Marchant, Ganske, and Gillanders finished the game with a +3 plus/minus.

Lindenwood improves to 4-11-1 with the win. The Lady Lions are now off until after the New Year's, when they face St. Lawrence in a two-game series in Anaheim, Calif.
