The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated 3-2 by the Mercyhurst Lakers on Friday afternoon from Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa. The Lakers scored the game-winning goal with 89 seconds remaining in the third period.
Each team recorded exactly six shots on goal during the first period, but both were held scoreless over the first 20 minutes of play. Lindenwood netminder
Jolene deBruyn stopped all six shots sent her way, ending the period with six saves.
Mercyhurst took a two-minute inference penalty at the 1:19 mark of the second period, sending Lindenwood to the power play. With just 14 seconds remaining on the power play, Mercyhurst tallied a shorthanded score, and grabbed a 1-0 lead. Megan Whiddon was credited with the shorthanded goal for the Lakers.
Nearly four minutes later Lindenwood responded with an even-strength goal, tying the score at 1-1.
Sarah Bobrowski found the back of the net for the Lady Lions, her first goal of the season. The goal raised Bobrowski's season point total to six, and was assisted by Brittania Gillanders and
Tae Otte. For Gillanders, the helper was her fifth of the year, and brought her into a tie with
Cierra Paisley for the team lead in points.
The score would remain tied for only 74 seconds, as Mercyhurst would reestablish its lead while on the power play. Brooke Hartwick netted the power-play score for the Lakers, who regained a one-goal lead. Mercyhurst would protect the led for the remainder of the second period.
With time ticking away in the final frame, Lindenwood turned up its pressure and created several scoring chances on the offensive end of the ice. The hard work paid off for the Lady Lions as
Courtney Ganske evened the score with 7:11 remaining in the final period. For Ganske, the goal was her fifth of the season, tied for the most on the team. Assiting on Ganske's goal were
Lillian Marchant and
Carla Goodwin.
With the game tied late in the third period, Mercyhurst's Jennifer MacAskill centered the puck to teammate Maggie Knott who notched the game-winning goal. Knott's game deciding score came with 89 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Lady Lions would pull deBruyn in favor of the extra attacker, but were unsuccessful in their attempts to even the score in the final seconds.
deBruyn finished the game with 22 saves.
Mercyhurst outshot Lindenwood 25-19 for the game. Gillanders registered a team-high five shots for the Lady Lions.
Lindenwood failed to covert on its six power-play chances, while Mercyhurst scored on one of its two chances.
Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 5-21-2 and 3-13-1 in the CHA. With the victory, Meryhurst improves to 12-17-2 and 8-8-1 in conference play. The two teams will conclude the two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET from Mercyhurst Ice Center.
