The Lindenwood women's hockey team dropped its final regular season road contest of the season on Saturday afternoon versus the Mercyhurst Lakers. Lindenwood was defeated by a final score of 5-1 from Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.
The first period consisted of heavy Mercyhurst pressure on the offensive end of the ice. Lindenwood goaltender
Jolene deBruyn stood tall and stopped all but one of the 17 shots sent her way. With 2:41 seconds remaining in the opening period, Mercyhurst scored a power-play goal, and took a 1-0 lead. Jillian Skinner was credited with the Laker goal, and helped Mercyhurst secure a one-goal lead heading into the first intermission. deBruyn ended the first period with 16 saves.
Mercyhurst would tally the first two scores of the second period, as its lead was extended to a three-goal margin. Megan Whiddon and Michele Robillard scored 47 seconds apart for the Lakers at even-strength.
Lindenwood's
Cierra Paisley would net her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 16:49 mark of the middle period, bringing the score to 3-1 in favor of Mercyhurst.
Kirsten Martin was credited with the assist on Paisley's goal, her fifth helper of the season.
The Lakers would tack on two power-play goals during the third period, the only two scores of the last 20 minutes. Mercyhurst closed out the game with a 5-1 lead.
deBruyn made 34 saves in the game.
Mercyhurst held the edge in shots 39-10. Paisley led the Lady Lions with three shots on goal.
Lindenwood finished the afternoon scoreless on its lone power-play attempt, while Mercyhurst scored on three of its five chances with the advantage.
Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 5-22-2 and 3-14-1 from within the CHA. With the victory, Mercyhurst improves to 13-17-2 and 9-8-1 in conference play. Lindenwood will return to Wentzville, Mo. for its final home series of the season on February 24-25 against the Robert Morris Colonials. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on February 24 at Lindenwood Ice Arena.
