Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Late-Third Period Goal Halts Potential Upset for Women’s Hockey

The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated 2-1 by the No. 9 Robert Morris Colonials on Friday evening from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. The Colonials scored the game-winning goal with just over three minutes remaining in the final period.

After over 16 minutes of scoreless action to open the first period, Lindenwood broke through with the first goal of the game at the 16:24 mark of the period. Britannia Gillanders crashed the net following a Lillian Marchant shot on goal and buried the rebound chance, giving Lindenwood a 1-0 lead. For Gillanders the goal was her team-leading sixth score of the season. Marchant tallied her third assist of the season on the play, while Katie Nokelby registered her first helper of the year.

The Lady Lions headed into the first intermission with a one-goal lead.

Robert Morris tied the score at the 8:33 mark of the middle period, as Jaycee Gebhard found the back of the net at even-strength. The Colonials goal would be the lone score of the period, which ended with the teams tied 1-1. Robert Morris outshot Lindenwood 15-13 during the second frame, and held a two-period lead in shots on goal, 25-20.

The game remained tied late in the third period, as both teams exchanged opportunities on each end of the ice. With just over three minutes showing on the clock, Robert Morris won an offensive-zone faceoff back to Kirsten Welsh near the blueline. Welsh unleashed a slapshot through traffic that was deflected by Gebhard into the back of the net, sending Robert Morris ahead by a score of 2-1.

The Colonials would protect the one-goal lead for the remainder of the contest, winning the game by a final score of 2-1.

Jolene deBruyn made the start in goal for Lindenwood, finishing the evening with 36 saves. deBruyn turned in double-digit save totals in all three periods, including a game-high 14 saves during the second frame.

Robert Morris outshot Lindenwood for the game, 38-26. Taylor Girard led the Lady Lions with six shots on goal.

Lindenwood secured 31 of the 57 faceoffs, paced by Cierra Paisley who won 14 of her 20 draws.

Lindenwood failed to score on any of its four power-play chances, despite recording 11 shots with the skater advantage. Lindenwood held Robert Morris scoreless on its five power-play opportunities.

Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 5-23-2 and 3-15-1 in conference play. With the victory, Robert Morris improves to 21-4-6 and 14-3-2 from within the CHA. The two teams will return Lindenwood Ice Arena tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. to conclude the two-game series and the regular-season schedule.

Prior to the start of tomorrow's game, Lindenwood will pay tribute to the four members of its 2016-17 senior class.
