One night after setting a career-high with 48 assists,
Adam Brewster tallied 53 dimes as the Lindenwood men's volleyball team won a thriller for its first victory of the season in five sets over Fort Wayne from Hyland Arena.
Ryan Vorderer also reached the 20-dig plateau for the first time in his three-year career, all without committing one receiving error.Â
Lindenwood came back from a 2-1 deficit to win the fifth set, 18-16. The Lions hit .296 as a team compared to the Mastadons' .130 in the second-set win, before taking advantage of the visitors' errors in the fourth set to force a deciding frame. The host Lions tallied 11 kills and hit .500 as a team in the fifth set, which would lead to the first win of 2017.Â
Brewster assisted on 53 of the team's 60 kills, averaging over 10 per set for consecutive matches and for the fourth total time this season. The sophomore also set a career-high with five points, with a pair of kills and six assisted blocks. The Lee's Summit, Mo. native recorded eight digs on the night, his second-highest mark of the season.Â
Vorderer was perfect at the libero position, failing to make a single receiving error in 33 opportunities. The total of 20 digs is the sixth time the junior has reached double-digits this season, and second time in back-to-back matches after securing 11 at Lewis and 14 against Missouri Baptist. Vorderer is now averaging 2.35 digs per set for the season.Â
Sam Schindler led the Lions on the attack with 13 kills, hitting at a .524 rate. The freshman paced the team with 16 points, as he added a pair of service aces and assisted blocks to his line.
Jake Duckworth had 14 kills to lead in that category, while adding six digs.
Blake Koppel was second behind Vorderer with nine digs as he almost recorded a double-double with 10 kills.Â
Michael Chard marked a season-high 10 kills, surpassing his previous mark of six at Quincy earlier in the season.
Connor Hipelius was involved in 10 blocks, including one solo, to lead the team. Lindenwood finished with 12 blocks, and recorded 77 points as a team.Â
The win ends the 13-match losing streak for Lindenwood, and is now 1-8 in conference play. The Lions will ride the momentum into next weekend as they host MIVA-rivals Lewis and Loyola on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. The match scheduled against the Flyers is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from Hyland Arena.
