The Lindenwood wrestling team dominated the No. 19-ranked Newman University Jets by a final score of 36-8 on Saturday for senior night. The Lions registered a season-high four pins for dual play.
Wrestlers featured on senior night and honored before the announced lineups included
Dillon Archer,
Batchka Zulkhuu,
Jeff Held,
Colton Orlando,
Greg Jacquez,
Morgan Fitzgerald, and
Gabe Stein.
Carlos Jacquez, ranked 10th in Division II, opened the night up at 125 pounds with his toughest matchup of the season against the No. 2-ranked wrestler in Dustin Reed. Reed scored two points early by a takedown that set the tone for the match, but Jacquez stood his ground by allowing just an 8-2 decision-loss to give the Jets only three points.
Then the Lions started to pounce.
Hunter Haralson, ranked No. 5 in Division II among 133-pound wrestlers, jumped right onto the mat aggressively and needed just 56 seconds to pin his opponent to give the Lions a 6-3 lead. Following that match was a Newman forfeit at 141 in which
Derek Heil was credited the victory.
Ronnie Gentile competed in a close dual with Newman's Tyler Mies, who ranked No. 5 among wrestlers weighing 149 pounds. Gentile led for most of the dual until Mies tied the score up at eight apiece with a few seconds left in the third round, forcing overtime. Both wrestlers came at each other aggressively attempting a takedown, but Mies converted one with just 10 seconds left. With that victory, the Jets cut the Lions' lead to 12-6.
However,
Tim Bogar halted the Jets' momentum 37 seconds later. The 157-pound freshman registered his first career victory in dual play by pinning his opponent to give the Lions six more points. That was also his fifth pin of the season.
Kyle Jolas rebounded off his loss against McKendree by scrapping together a tough 3-1 decision at 165 that also resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty charged to Newman. The Lions led 21-5.
Zulkhuu sat out for senior night and enjoyed the dual on the bench.
Patrick Kristin stepped into the 174-pound matchup and competed hard in a 7-3 decision awarded to Newman.
The Lions would sweep the rest of the matchups in a dominating fashion as
David Hamil recorded his first pin of the season 45 seconds into the match at 184 pounds. Archer shined on his senior night when he won a 10-6 decision for his 11th victory of the year at 197 pounds.
There was a surprise for the heavyweight matchup from the Lions.
John Kramer entered his first dual of the season and ignited the crowd when he pinned his opponent in 48 seconds. Kramer competed in the fall in various tournaments and had won four matches including three pins.
With the win, the Lions improve to 7-4 overall including a 3-2 record against MIAA schools. They will conclude their dual play portion of the season on Wednesday when they host Maryville from Hyland Arena at 7 pm.
