The Lindenwood softball team only recorded three hits in a game-one loss on Friday to Missouri S&T in Rolla, Mo. before escaping in extra innings in the nightcap.
Seniors
Madi Huot and
Maddie Bohr had the only hits in game one for the Lady Lions, while Huot secured her fourth-multi hit game of the season.
Morgan Brown and
Maria Tippit each had three hits in game two, while
Austine Pauley and
Brooke Tiehes had two hits apiece. Tippit started for the first time since February 25, and her first time at third base this season.
Kimberly Fozzard earned the victory in the eight-inning affair, holding the host Miners to five hits.
Game One
Missouri S&T scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings as it never looked back. Freshman
Stormee Galka allowed another run in the fifth inning after retiring seven of the previous eight hitters to make the score 5-0 Miners.
Bohr singled to lead off the third and advanced to second base when Galka grounded out to third base, but Fozzard lined into a double play to end any threat Lindenwood had in mind. Huot bunted for a single in the fifth inning before recording a knock through the right side in the seventh. Pauley drew the lone walk for the Lady Lions in the game.
Galka went the distance, allowing nine hits and one free pass. With the loss, the southpaw drops to 5-4.
Game Two
Singles by Brown and Tippit set up a run-scoring single by
Faith Koffron gave the Lady Lions the early 2-0 lead. Huot doubled to lead off the second inning before stealing third base and scoring on a throwing error, but Fozzard allowed three runs from inside the circle to allow the Miners to even the score.
The freshman righty retired 11 of the 12 hitters in the middle innings, but the Lindenwood offense failed to string hits together. Fozzard would eventually sit down six of the next seven batters to finish the game with the win.
In the top of the eighth inning, Huot began on second base per the international tie-breaker rule. The senior advanced to third base on a
Brooke Tiehes sacrifice bunt, and scored when Pauley singled up the middle. The run would hold for Lindenwood to win, 4-3.
Brown and Huot had the only extra-base hits for the Lady Lions, while Galka, Tippit, and Tiehes all had sacrifice bunts.
Lindenwood improves to 9-9 on the season, and 1-3 away from home. The Lady Lions have now won three of their past four games. The road trip continues next weekend when Lindenwood travels to MIAA foes Emporia State and Washburn. The doubleheader against the Hornets begins at 2 p.m. on Friday in Emporia, Kan.
