The Lindenwood softball team dropped a pair of conference games to Emporia State on Friday afternoon in Emporia, Kan. Both games saw the Hornets score late to secure victories as the Lady Lion offense stalled, recording just seven hits in the doubleheader.
Game One
Kimberly Fozzard allowed just four hits and one run in the game-one loss. The freshman retired six in a row before issuing the free pass that would eventually come around and score in the bottom of the sixth inning. After walking the leadoff hitter, Fozzard recorded the next two outs ahead of the single that scored the game-winning run.Â
Morgan Brown led off the Lindenwood seventh inning with a single, but would be left in scoring position to end the game. Lexi Theis doubled in the second inning for the Lady Lions' only other hit.Â
Game Two
The Hornets broke through in the third inning in the nightcap against
Stormee Galka. The freshman retired the first two hitters of the inning, but a pair of singles and a throwing error resulted in the early 1-0 lead for the home team.Â
Lindenwood had a couple chances to even the score. In the fourth inning, Theis and
Brooke Tiehes singled with two outs, but were stranded. In the sixth inning,
Hannah Johnson doubled ahead of a Brown single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Fozzard popped up before Theis hit a liner to the shortstop, and Tippit, who replaced Johnson, was picked off third base to end the threat. Emporia State added three runs in its half of the sixth inning to go ahead 4-0, which would hold as the final.Â
Galka allowed two earned runs and seven hits, while punching out one.
Austine Pauley doubled in the second inning. Six Lady Lions had a knock on the day, with Brown recording two.Â
The sweep sends Lindenwood to 9-11 on the season, and 0-4 in MIAA play. The Lady Lions will have another chance to get their first win in conference action tomorrow afternoon in Topeka, Kan. when they battle Washburn in a doubleheader.
