Offensive Surge Leads to Softball Sweep of Wisconsin-Parkside

The 14 runs scored in game one is the second time this season Lindenwood has scored double-digit runs.

The Lindenwood softball team put on an offensive clinic Sunday afternoon from Lou Brock Sports Complex to complete the sweep of Wisconsin-Parkside for the weekend. Game one saw a combined 24 runs and 32 hits as the Lady Lions outlasted the Rangers, 14-10. The second game of the twin bill saw less offense, but more efficiency from inside the circle as Stormee Galka allowed four hits in the 3-0 victory. Madi Huot reached base six times on the day.

Game One
Huot led the surge for the Lindenwood offense. The senior reached base five times in the win, including two homers and a single to total seven RBI's and four runs scored. Kimberly Fozzard, Keri Sheehan, and Brooke Tiehes each had a multi-hit game, while four others recorded one knock.

Freshman Stormee Galka came in relief to earn her third win of the season, striking out three Parkside hitters.

The Rangers scored two first-inning runs on a double down the left-field line, but the Lady Lions would tally the next 10 unanswered. Huot drilled a two-run homer off the right-field foul pole in the first inning to tie the game at two apiece, and then smacked a grand slam to right-center field in the second inning to give Lindenwood the 8-2 lead.

Parkside came back with a six-run fourth inning on trio of extra-base hits, but the comeback attempt wouldn't phase Lindenwood. Fozzard and Galka singled in the bottom of the inning to lead 12-8, scoring Huot and Faith Koffron.

Huot knocked in her seventh run of the game in the fifth inning, and Becca Stocker drove in a run to increase the lead to 14-9. Parkside would get a run in its half of the seventh inning, but Galka retired the final two hitters to end the game victorious at 14-10.

Game Two
Galka continued her momentum from the relief outing in game one to go the distance and earn her second victory of the day, and third of the weekend. The southpaw struck out four in the win, while only surrendering four hits and one free pass. Fozzard had another multi-hit game, while seniors Morgan Brown and Lexi Theis also had a pair of knocks. Maria Tippit came off the bench in the fifth inning to single and come around to score in her only plate appearance of the weekend.

Theis tripled in the first inning to score Brown and Huot to give Lindenwood the early 2-0 lead, which it would never relinquish. Tippit singled to lead off the fifth inning, stole second base, and scored on Brown single to increase the lead to three.

The freshman lefty retired 12 of the first 13 Parkside hitters, and worked around a fifth-inning rally attempt to only throw 75 pitches in the win.

With the sweep, the Lady Lions improve to 6-6 on the season. The 14 runs scored in the first game is the most in a win since March 2014, and the 6-6 mark to begin the year is the latest Lindenwood has been .500 or better since the 2013 season. The Lady Lions will travel to Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western this coming weekend for a pair of doubleheaders.
