After dropping game one by the score of 14-1, the Lindenwood softball team scored 10 runs in the nightcap, but No. 23 Missouri Western tallied a pair in the bottom of the seventh inning to sweep the doubleheader in St. Joseph, Mo. on Thursday.
Brooke Tiehes collected five hits on the day, including one double, in the two losses. The senior is now 11-for-27 on the season.
Morgan Brown had two hits in the first game, while
Lexi Theis and
Stormee Galka each had a pair of knocks in game two.
Kimberly Fozzard and
Becca Stocker drove in three runs in the second game, while Tiehes recorded the lone RBI for the Lady Lions in game one.
Game One
The No. 23 Griffons scored in each inning, including three in the first frame. Missouri Western would grow the lead to 6-0 after three innings, but scored eight times in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead 14-0.
Tiehes drove in Brown in the top of the fifth inning to avoid the shutout, but that would be it for Lindenwood in game one. As a team, the Lady Lions had six hits with Theis and Galka each having one.
Fozzard took the loss in the circle, striking out one.
Bethany Fountain came in relief for the third time this season, recording the final out in the fourth inning.
Game Two
The Lindenwood offense remained stagnant to begin the second game as Missouri Western scored twice in its half of the second. The Lady Lions came alive in the third inning, scoring three runs when Fozzard drilled a go-ahead homer.
After exchanging runs the next couple innings, the Griffons took a 7-5 lead heading into the sixth. The Lady Lions put a crooked number on the scoreboard with a four-run sixth inning. Tiehes singled home Fozzard before Stocker and
Maria Tippit had consecutive singles to score three more times.
MIssouri Western tied the game in its half of the sixth, but Theis singled to score Galka and take the 10-9 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Inside the circle, Galka issued a free pass after striking out the leadoff hitter. A Griffons' triple tied the game, which would score two hitters later when the runner beat the throw to the plate. Missouri Western would walk off with the 11-10 victory and the sweep.
Galka allowed 13 hits and struck out four in the loss, dropping her to 4-3 on the season.
Lindenwood falls to 6-8 on the season. The Lady Lions travel to Maryville, Mo. tomorrow for a doubleheader against Northwest Missouri.
