Brendan Feldmann Tosses Gem, Lions Win Two on Thursday

The Lindenwood baseball team rallied behind the pitching staff on Thursday to pick up two wins over Nebraska-Kearney by scores of 3-1 and 7-5 respectively at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

Brendan Feldmann put on a pitching clinic in game one after tossing 8.1 innings and tallied 14 strikeouts.  Feldmann allowed just five hits and one run which was an unearned run while Connor Law pitched the final two outs and registered a strikeout to earn the save.  Kyle Teter drove in two clutch runs on two hits including an-RBI triple to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.

Tyler Muehling put the Lions on the board in the first inning as he scored on a sacrifice fly by Teter.  The Lopers tied the game in the top of the third inning, but it would be the last time Nebraska-Kearney would cross the plate.  Teter drove in Wes Degener on a triple to right field and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Lang in the eighth.

Feldmann struck out three batters in the third inning and did it again in the top of the eighth inning to reach his 14-strikeout mark.  The Lions executed a perfect relay from right center all the way to third base to get the first runner out in the top of the sixth to keep the Lopers from scoring.  Law shut the door in the ninth and struck out the final batter of the game to solidify a 3-1 win in the opening game of the series.

Blake Beckmann earned his fourth win of the season after tossing six innings, allowed nine hits, and struck out seven batters.  Law tallied his second save of the day and fourth of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.  Connor Behrens led the squad with two RBI, three runs scored, and posted two hits including a home run.

Beckmann allowed just three hits in the first four innings and Behrens blasted a solo shot off the light pole behind the left center wall to put the Lions up 1-0.  The offense was sparked for the fifth inning as Muehling hit a ground-rule double to left center and scored on a Drew Quinones single.  Teter hit a double down the right field line to score Quinones and Behrens drove in Teter on a double of his own.  Behrens crossed the plate on a wild pitch as Lindenwood led 5-0 after five innings of play.

Nebraska-Kearney cut Lindenwood lead to just one run after a four-run top of the seventh inning on five hits and two errors.  The Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the frame after a balk and an error allowed Lindenwood to take a three-run lead.  The Lopers added a run in the top of the eight to make it a 7-5 ballgame, but Law shut the door for the second time in the day to give Lindenwood the two-run victory.

After the doubleheader win, Lindenwood improves to 12-7 on the season and 5-3 in the MIAA while Nebraska-Kearney falls to 7-10 on the year and 0-5 in conference play.  The Lions will conclude the three-game set with the Lopers on Friday at 12 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
