The Lindenwood softball team dropped game one to McKendree on Tuesday afternoon to break its five-game winning streak, but poured on seven runs in the nightcap to beat the visitors 7-2 from Lou Brock Sports Complex. After sweeping Fort Hays State and Lincoln, the split was the Lady Lions' first since April 1 against Northeastern State.Â
Lindenwood received the much-needed quality start from
Kimberly Fozzard, who only allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks. The freshman struck out two hitters en route to earning her fifth win of the season and first victory since March 16.Â
Austine Pauley drove in three in the win, going two-for-three with a double and a triple. The freshman has increased her team-leading total bases to 46, and now has the most hits on the team with 30, tied with
Morgan Brown. The three RBI now gives the St. Charles native 19 on the season, which also leads the team.Â
Faith Koffron and
Maddie Bohr each had a pair of knocks in the nightcap, as the latter drew her first start since March 29. Koffron has raised her batting average to .375 in 40 at-bats.Â
Game One
Stormee Galka only allowed two earned runs, and three total, but that was enough for the visiting Bearcats to win, 3-1. The southpaw struck out five and walked none in the loss.Â
McKendree and Lindenwood traded three hits each in the opening frame, but the visitors scored two runs on an extra-base hit after a pair of steals by Jamie Doggendorf. Three consecutive singles by
Adele Linderman,
Hannah Johnson, and
Lexi Theis cut the deficit in half, but Johnson and Theis were stranded after a fielder's choice and groundout.Â
The last of the scoring occurred in the top of the second inning when Pauley dropped a liner, allowing a run to score for the Bearcats. The Lady Lions had just one hit after the first inning, and fell 3-1 in the opener.Â
Game Two
The Lady Lions scored first in game two, setting the stage for Pauley after Bohr and
Bethany Fountain reached on singles. Pauley drilled a liner down the left-field line to jump Lindenwood out to an early 2-0 lead.Â
Johnson hit her second homer of the season in the third inning ahead of Fountain drawing a walk to force the McKendree starter out of the game. Pauley and Theis were issued free passes, and Koffron knocked a single to increase the Lindenwood lead to 4-0. Though the Lady Lions would leave the bases loaded in the third, they scored three more in the fourth inning on a squeeze play by Fountain. Pauley then tripled home Bohr before Theis singled home the freshman.Â
Fozzard's only mistake came in the sixth inning when Rachel Hastings hit a double over Linderman's head in center, scoring two runs for the visitors. The freshman retired the final five McKendree hitters to win the game for Lindenwood, 7-2.Â
The split sends the Lady Lions to 16-19 on the season. Lindenwood will travel to Jefferson City tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader with Lincoln beginning at 3 p.m. The Lady Lions will look to complete the season sweep over the Blue Tigers after a pair of victories last weekend in St. Charles.
