Pitcher Brendan Feldman tossed eight innings, allowing three earned runs while scattering eight hits, but three errors and four unearned tallies for Emporia State led the Hornets to a series-opening win over the Lindenwood baseball team on Saturday night in Emporia, Kan.
Hornets' hurler Seth Holman was throwing a no-hitter until
Wes Degener singled through the right side with two outs in the sixth inning.
Drew Quinones also singled on the night, while
Ryan Sosnowski and
Kyle Teter each doubled, with the latter driving in a run with his extra-base knock.
Brett Andersen came off the bench in the seventh inning and immediately contributed with a successful squeeze bunt play. Andersen also knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.
The Hornets scored two runs in the first inning, one in the fourth, and a pair in the seventh and eighth innings. Four of Emporia State's first five runs were unearned as Lindenwood made three errors, allowing multiple runs to cross the plate as a result.
Feldman completed his third game of the season, but fell to 4-3 with the losing decision. As a team, the Lions drop to 25-15 with the nine-game winning streak snapped to the team atop the MIAA standings. Game two will begin tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Glennen Field in Emporia.
