The Lindenwood baseball team scored three runs in the sixth inning to even the middle game of the series at Emporia State, but the Hornets tallied five of its own and the Lions ran out of runs after three more in the ninth to lose 10-8. Freshman
Blake Beckmann took the loss in relief, while sophomore
Kyle Teter registered three hits on the day, including a homer.
Drew Quinones got the Lions on the scoreboard early with a two-run double in the first inning, scoring
Ryan Sosnowski and
Tyler Muehling. Emporia State evened the game in its half of the first off starter
Andrew Eilers on a pair of hits and a free pass.
Eilers retired 11 of the next 12 Hornets' batters, including two strikeouts to begin the fifth inning. However, four straight hits and three runs chased the junior from the mound and Beckmann came in relief. The Lions didn't back down, scoring three runs in the sixth to tie the game.
Brett Andersen singled home Teter before
Paul Sherwood grounded out as Ryan Singbush crossed the plate. After an Emporia State changed pitchers,
Wes Degener singled to score Andersen and tie the game at 5-5.
Emporia State rattled off five straight runs in innings 6-8, stretching the lead to 10-5. After Quinones tripled to score Muehling, Teter drilled a homer to center field to cut the deficit to two runs. Hornets' pitcher Nathan Whitcomb entered the game and retired Singbush on two pitches to end the game, 10-8.
Degener and Quinones each had a pair of hits, while four others had one knock. Quinones led the team with three RBI, as Teter and Muehling crossed the plate twice. The loss drops Beckmann to 5-3 on the season.
Lindenwood falls to 25-16 and 18-11 in conference. The Lions will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Glennen Field.
