The Lindenwood baseball team upset No. 10 Emporia State 14-12 on Monday afternoon in Emporia, Kan. with the help of record numbers by a pair of Lions.
Â
Tyler Muehling and
Kyle Teter each moved to the top of the NCAA-era record books for a tie with the most hits in a game with five base-knocks. Teter also placed himself in a tie for first place with seven RBI in a single game after he matched Wade Rothermich who drove in seven runs in the 2015 season. The Lions ended the game with 20 hits as a team while six players registered at least two hits in the game.
Â
Ryan Sosnowski put the Lions on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to right field before Teter drove in Muehling on a single to center. The Hornets responded with three runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead after the first frame. The scoring continued in the second inning as
Drew Quinones tied the game with a two-out single to second and Teter drove in a pair of runs to give Lindenwood a two-run lead. Again, Emporia State answered to regain the lead 6-5 after a few hits and a fielding error by the Lions.
Â
Lindenwood tallied two more runs in the top of the third to take a 7-6 lead, but saw it diminish after back-to-back RBI-singles by the Hornets resulted in an 8-7 advantage for the host team. Emporia State took advantage in the bottom of the fourth and drove in three runs to take a commanding four-run lead. Teter turned the momentum with a three-run shot over the left field wall to pull the Lions within a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Â
Sosnowski tied the game in the top of the seventh after solid base running by
Wes Degener allowed him to cross the plate. Degener picked up two key RBI in the top of the eighth with a single to right field to put Lindenwood in from 13-11. Teter added an insurance run and his seventh RBI of the game on a single up the middle to put the Lions ahead 14-11. Emporia State scored just one more run in the final inning, but the offense was too much for the Hornets as the Lions held on to the 14-12 victory.
Â
Lindenwood improves to 26-16 on the year and 19-11 in the MIAA while No. 10 Emporia State drops to 34-9 on the season and 23-6 in conference play. The Lions will head to Sauget, Ill. on Tuesday to take on Lindenwood-Belleville in a non-conference game starting at 6 p.m.
