Second-Half Surge Propels Field Hockey to Comeback Victory

The Lindenwood field hockey team captured its fourth-consecutive victory to begin the 2017 season on Friday evening from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo. The Lions scored twice in the final eight minutes of the match to defeat the Mercy Mavericks 3-2.

Megan Martin opened the scoring for Lindenwood nearly 20 minutes in, netting her first goal of the season. Jessie Londono tallied the assist on the play, feeding Martin with an excellent cross pass. The Lions would protect the one-goal lead through the halftime intermission. Lindenwood held a 9-3 edge in shots after the first period.

As the match moved into its 58th minute, Mercy scored two goals in a 17-second span to take a 2-1 lead. Samantha Perez and Angela Robbins were the Maverick goal scorers.

Lindenwood responded quickly, tying the score in the 64th minute behind a goal from Renee Duffy. Duffy's first goal of the year was assisted by Greta Banholzer.

Just over three minutes later, Bridget Hoogendijk recorded her second game-winning goal of the season, putting Lindenwood ahead for good. Hoogendijk slammed home a rebound opportunity in front of the Mercy goal for the game-deciding score.

Skylar Starbeck earned her fourth victory of the year in the cage for the Lions, posting one save.

Lindenwood out shot Mercy 23-5 during the match, while also holding an 11-3 edge in penalty corners.

With the victory, Lindenwood improves its record to 4-0 on the season, including a 3-0 mark from within the ECAC.

Lindenwood will be back in action tomorrow during a non-conference clash with the Queens (N.C.) Royals. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. from Hunter Stadium.
