Women's Hockey Drops CHA Opener in Overtime

GAME OVERVIEW
The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated by the Syracuse Orange 5-4 in overtime on Friday evening from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. The loss moves the Lions' record to 1-4-0 and 0-1-0 from within the CHA.

The visiting Orange got out to a 1-0 lead, scoring the only goal of the first period on the power play with just over two minutes to play in the opening period. Syracuse's goal was the only score of the first frame.

Lindenwood scored twice in the second period to take a one-goal lead into the second intermission. Taylor Kirwan had Lindenwood's first goal of the game at the 3:25 mark of the period, and Lillian Marchant netted the team's second goal of the period at 8:21. Kirwan's goal was the first of her career, while Marchant's was her second goal of the year.

Jada Burke gave the Lions a two-goal lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the third period, scoring the first goal of her collegiate career.

Syracuse stormed back with three goals in a span of 2:06 to take a 4-3 lead with just over five minutes left in regulation.

With the Lions shorthanded following a series of late penalties, Lindenwood's Taylor Girard came streaking down the center of the ice to net an equalizing goal for the Lions, tying the score at 4-4 with 3:45 remaining in the final period.

Neither team scored again in regulation, and the contest headed to a five-minute sudden-death overtime.

Syracuse put home the game-winning goal with 1:40 left in overtime to secure the road victory.
