Scheidegger Center Hosts 2018 Lindenwood Athletics Hall of Fame Event

The Scheidegger Center hosted the 2018 Lindenwood Athletics Hall of Fame induction event Saturday night in St. Charles, Missouri.

Five individuals and two teams were enshrined including Sarah Hughes from shotgun sports, Kyle Gray from men's golf, Hoyt Gregory from football, Justiene Cameron from women's lacrosse, Andrew Helmick from men's football, the 2005 men's bowling team, and 2006 women's bowling team.

Assistant Athletic Director for Event Operations and Communications Mike Morgan served as emcee for the event.  He introduced Lindenwood University President Dr. Michael Shonrock and Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Brad Wachler, who both congratulated the inductees and welcomed the family and friends in attendance.

Each individual delivered a brief acceptance speech and then spent a few moments answering a few questions from Morgan.  Former shotgun sports coach Mike Elam accepted the honor on behalf of Hughes, who was unable to attend the ceremony.

Men's bowling team member Shea Bittenbender (2003-07) spoke on behalf of the 2005 men's bowling team and Men's Head Coach Randy Lightfoot sat with Morgan.  Women's bowling team member Jenn (Ridilla) Helferstay spoke on behalf of the 2006 women's bowling team and Women's Head Coach Phil Vida spent a few moments with Morgan, which concluded the event for the evening.

Sarah Hughes was a four-year member of the shotgun sports team. She won four straight high overall events as well as the combined and international event. Hughes made the podium 24 times in her career at Lindenwood. She helped lead her team to national championships in all four seasons on campus and was also named a NRA All-American three times.

Kyle Gray was a four-year member of the men's golf team from 2006-2009. He is one of the most decorated golfers in the history of the program. He was the HAAC Conference champion and HAAC All Conference team all four seasons he participated. Gray participated in the NAIA National Tournament in all four years as well and his highest finish was seventh. In his four years he was placed on four All-American teams. During his time, he also won four tournaments and finished in the top 10 in 27 separate tournaments.

Justiene (Groothuis) Cameron was a five-year member of the women's lacrosse team and earned team MVP honors for four straight season and was also the team rookie of the year as a freshman. She helped Lindenwood make the transition from the club to the NCAA level, and led Lindenwood to a 30-4 record and two conference championships in its first two years in the NCAA. She was a two-time first team all-WILA selection, a first-team All-American in 2010, and a first-team Academic All-District selection. In three years at the club level, she scored 139 goals and collected 51 assists, and 185 ground balls.

Hoyt Gregory was a four-year member of the Lindenwood football team from 1990-1994. Gregory was a two-time All-American offensive lineman and was the first ever Lion football player to earn that accolade. Gregory was the team captain his final two seasons and help lead some of the best rushing seasons in school history.

Andrew Helmick is statistically the best wide receiver in school history. He was the only player in program history with 200 or more receiving yards in a game, and has four of those games.
Helmick is the program leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, and is second all-time in all-purpose yards and total touchdowns. Not only does he hold numerous career records he also holds the single-season records for receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, 100-yard receiving games, and 200-yard receiving games. In his first season in the MIAA he was named to the honorable mention team and was also named to the second team all-region his junior season.

The 2005 men's bowling team won the first USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship (ITC) national title in Lindenwood bowling program history.  The Lions finished the 2004-05 season 14th in the men's team national power rankings, just the second time ever in top 16 at the time.  Lindenwood entered the national championship tournament as a dark horse but upset the third seed, the sixth seed, the second seed, and beat the eighth seed in the televised title match.

The 2006 women's bowling team won the first USBC ITC national title in Lindenwood women's bowling program history.  After finishing the 2005-06 season fifth in the women's team national power rankings, the highest ever for the program at that time, the women's team advanced to the ITC for only the fourth time in program history that season.  Although the squad had showed as a strong team during the year and at Sectionals, and were ranked sixth in the final coaches poll, they were considered an underdog in all but their first match at the ITC that year.
