The Lindenwood men's and women's tennis teams took on Oklahoma Baptist in dual matches on Saturday afternoon from Springfield, Mo. The men's team narrowly dropped their dual match by a 5-4 count, while the women's team suffered a 9-0 defeat.
Jonas Bergbom and
Naoufal El Idrissi each secured victories on the men's side at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Bergbom needed three sets to defeat his opponent, Lucas Branco, who entered the match ranked inside the top-50 nationally.
Antoine Barraud also registered a singles victory at No. 6 for the Lions. Bergbom and El Idrissi teamed up for Lindenwood's lone doubles win at the No. 1 position.
"Today was very tough, but we made significant steps in the right direction," said Lindenwood tennis head coach
Nicolai Nonnenbroich. "The women were in a difficult situation with only five players being able to compete. On the men's side, dropping the 5-4 decision was rough. We know exactly where we fell short and what we need to do in order to be successful. I am very proud of Bergbom for pulling out the win against a top-50 player, as a freshman, that was an impressive performance. We will come back tomorrow, focused and ready to get better."
Both Lindenwood tennis teams will return to action tomorrow morning during dual matches against Drury from Springfield, Mo.
