Carlos Jacquez Named All-American

Day Two
Carlos Jacquez finished sixth at the NCAA Division II National Championships to earn All-American status on Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

No. 5 Jacquez lost to No. 1 Elijah Hale of Central Oklahoma in the semifinal match.  Hale defeated Jacquez by a 4-3 decision after earning an extra point for riding time.  The sophomore lost his next two matches to No. 3 Brett Velasquez of St. Cloud State and No. 6 Josh Portillo from Nebraska-Kearney.

Carlos is the first Lion to be named an All-American since Terrel Wilbourn won the National Championship in 2016.  Jacquez is also the first All-American under second-year head coach Jimmy Rollins.  The Aurora, Ill. native finished his second season with a 29-5 record including an 11-1 mark in duals.

Day One
Carlos Jacquez will advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II National Championships for No. 16 Lindenwood wrestling after going 2-0 on Friday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

No. 5 Jacquez won his first match by a 15-6 major decision over Austin Neal of Newberry in the 125-pound weight class.  The sophomore took on defending National Champion Ivan McClay from Notre Dame (Ohio) in the quarterfinals.  No. 2 McClay held a 3-2 lead, but a late takedown by Jacquez created a roar in the arena as Jacquez held on for the 4-3 victory.  The Aurora, Ill. native has advanced to the semifinal match on Saturday and is guaranteed to be named All-American after winning his first two matches.

No. 8 Jake Borgmeyer lost his first match to No. 11 Matt Halverson of Wisconsin-Parkside.  Borgmeyer faced conference-foe No. 3 Jared Hinrichs in hopes of staying alive, but a stalling call late in the match was the deciding point in the 285-pound weight division.  Nate Trepanier lost his first match to No. 6 Frank Yattoni as his lone shot came late in the match.  Trepanier mounted a comeback after falling behind early and nearly caught Yattoni, but failed to complete the attempted pin.  No. 12 Nate Demison finished Trepanier in the next match in the 149-pound weight division by a 5-2 margin.

Jacquez will look to take down No. 1 and conference-rival Eli Hale in the semifinals on Saturday.  The semifinals will begin at 10 a.m. while the finals will start at 6 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
