The No. 1 Lindenwood women's lacrosse team defeated the No. 12 Grand Valley State Lakers by a 15-13 score on Monday afternoon from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo. With the victory, Lindenwood posted its fourth-consecutive regular season without a home loss.
Lindenwood scored seven of the game's first 12 goals to take a 7-5 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The Lakers responded by scoring five consecutive goals, and took a 10-7 lead with 8:01 left in the first half.
The Lions found the back of the net twice more before the end of the half, and entered the halftime intermission trailing by a score of 10-9.
Lindenwood scored six straight goals to begin the second half, and built a 15-10 lead with 6:32 remaining in the game. The Lions held the Lakers without a goal for nearly 32 minutes of game time, before finally surrendering a goal at the 6:13 mark of the second half. Grand Valley State scored twice more before time expired, bringing the game to its final score of 15-13.
Rachel Ortell made eight saves in goal for the Lions to earn her 13th win of the season. Ortell made four saves in each half.
Allison Hurley led the Lions with six points and four assists.
Sophie Buelow netted a team-leading four goals.
Hannah Doughty had three goals and one assist, while
Cassie Stucklen and
Maria Johnson both had two goals apiece.
Johnson secured a season-high nine draw controls for Lindenwood.
Morgan Reader scored her first goal of the season, and also scooped up a team-leading four ground balls.
With its win, Lindenwood improves to 13-0 to begin the season. The Lions will return to action on Friday evening in Colorado Springs, Colo. for a 7:00 p.m. MT matchup with the UCCS Mountain Lions.
