Stephen Friedland Earns First Collegiate Win

Freshman goaltender Stephen Friedland earned his first collegiate win and shutout as the Lions stopped Iowa State 3-0 Saturday night at the ISU Arena in Ames, Iowa.

After a scoreless first period, Lindenwood took a 1-0 lead on a Victor Lombardi shot with help from Brendan Murphy at 8:11 of the second.  The Lions continued the thwart the Cyclones and then added to the advantage on the power play midway through the third.  Hayden Dawes and Aapo Nurminen set up Vegard Faret at 9:30 and Lindenwood had a 2-0 lead.  The Lions put the game away later in the period when Matt Runyon scored off a feed from Billy Denis with 3:31 remaining.

Lindenwood outshot Iowa State 39-24 and Friedland stopped all 24 shots he faced for the Lions, who went 1/5 on the power play while holding the Cyclones scoreless on four man-advantage chances.

With the victory, Lindenwood improved to 4-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League.  After three straight wins on the road, the Lions will try to make it four as they begin a home-and-home series against Illinois October 18.  The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at the Illinois Ice Arena in Champaign – Urbana, Illinois.  The second game of the set will take place beginning at 7:30 p.m. October 19 at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
